Meet Kensy Suazo

We were lucky to catch up with Kensy Suazo recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kensy, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
As a photographer creativity is very essential. As a mother myself, I was able to experience maternity from my own lens. Maternity is an important stage in our lives because we bring new life into this world, however we forget that maternity is something that makes us even more beautiful both inside and outside. I keep my creativity alive by finding ways to demonstrate the world the different facets of maternity. I keep my creativity alive by brainstorming about how my client’s features and their beautiful bellies will be able to shine even more than usual in a photograph.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I started my photography business by myself. It was very difficult at the beginning but my family’s support and client’s feedback were able to keep me going. Currently, my family joined me in the business and we are very proud to say that we are a family business! Photography is so special because it allows us to keep heart warming memories with us forever. I love photography because clients trust me to capture these special memories for them.

Currently we are expanding our horizons past maternity/newborns and started doing headshots. We are also planning on starting to take our photography to weddings, quinceañeras, and other events.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
There are so many skills and qualities needed for photography. Personally, experiencing maternity myself helps me to understand my clients better and to create a bond with them. When it comes to my newborn photoshoots, I’m able to understand the difficulty and hardships of being a first parent. Another important quality is that I’m very ambitious and hungry for knowledge. I’m always looking for ways to improve myself and improve my work.

My advice is to always be open for more knowledge and ways to improve yourself and your work ethic. I believe ambition, curiosity and patience are very important when it comes to establishing your own business. Always stay persistent and don’t give up!

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
Feeling overwhelmed is totally okay and happens to all of us. When working on a field that requires creativity and resilience, is important to know how to handle those feelings. If you’re overwhelmed your creativity is seriously affected and so is your work ethic. My advice when feeling overwhelmed is to simply put a pause on what you’re working on. Take a few minutes to do something you enjoy and to relax your mind. Personally, I work out, I watch a Netflix show, or I spend time with my family. Practicing self-care is very important for your own mental health, and is very important when it comes to our work life.
