Meet Kenyn Brown

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kenyn Brown. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kenyn below.

Kenyn, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
Wow what a great deep question. I’ve always known that with my outgoing personality, that I was different from anyone else in the room for most environments, and it has definitely been part of my journey. Whether it’s stepping into a wedding with a completely different cultural background or being the only DJ who looks and acts like me in a lineup of other musicians. Even the way I produce and write music. At first, it felt intimidating because you wonder if people will vibe with you or understand you or your style. But I learned something powerful: energy is universal. People may not look like me, but they can feel my confidence, my passion for music, and my commitment to creating an unforgettable experience. For me, the key is connection. I’m an extrovert, so I lean into that—I talk to people, I read the room, I build trust before I even hit play. I remind myself that I was invited into that space for a reason: because I bring something unique. Instead of shrinking back, I see it as an opportunity to stand out.
Over time, I’ve learned to stop trying to blend in and start owning what makes me different. That’s my superpower. The truth is, when you’re the only one, you’re not at a disadvantage, you’re in a position to make an impression no one else can.
God gave me this gift, so why not give Him my all and everyone who is around my best.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a wedding and events DJ, and I’ve been creating unforgettable moments on the dance floor since 2013. What I do is so much more than just playing music, I create an experience. For me, the most exciting part is reading a room and knowing exactly what song will take the energy to the next level. Every crowd is different, every couple has a unique story, and I love curating a soundtrack that reflects that. On top of DJing, I’m also a music producer, so I bring a creative edge to every set. I know how to blend tracks seamlessly and even add custom edits to make those big moments—like a grand entrance or first dance. The goal is to make something That represents my clients and makes those moments feel unique and one of a kind.
At the heart of my brand is connection. I want people to look back on their event and say, ‘That was the best night ever.’ Whether it’s a wedding, corporate event, or private party, my goal is to create memories that last a lifetime. Music is the tool, but joy is the mission.

Im deep into wedding season right now and pretty much DJ everyone weekend. I have an amazing opportunity in December to DJ for a corporate event at Busch Stadium and I’m also at the end of finishing my first solo album featuring my song remixes and some originals as well.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I would say adaptability, communication, and passion for music.

Adaptability, because no two events are the same. You can plan all day, but in the moment, things shift: timelines change, guests request songs you didn’t expect, and vibes fluctuate. Learning to pivot without losing confidence is huge.

Next communication. DJing weddings and events isn’t just about music; it’s about people. You’re often working with planners, photographers, and couples who have a vision. Being clear, calm, and professional—while still fun—sets you apart and earns trust.
Also, be confidant as an MC. Don’t be afraid to use the microphone. You aren’t just using music to make moments, your voice can carry that weight too. If you aren’t excited about what you are doing, no one else will be either.

Which brings up my final point, a passion for music and moments. It’s not just knowing tracks; it’s understanding genres, transitions, and how to read a crowd. The ability to create a journey, not just a playlist, is what keeps people talking about your set long after the party ends.
To anyone wanting to get into the music game, to play music, be a DJ or write music, Get out there and practice in real scenarios. Volunteer to DJ at smaller events to build confidence and test your adaptability. Work on your skills, learn how to listen and communicate effectively. And study music like crazy. Build set lists across genres, understand structure, and keep your library fresh. The technical skills will come, but the ability to connect and create a vibe—that’s what makes a DJ unforgettable.

Tell us what your ideal client would be like?
My favorite types of clients usually is someone who truly values music as an experience, not just background noise. They’re the type of couple or event planner who wants a party that feels personal and unforgettable. They trust me to read the room and create energy, but they also come with their own vision and vibe that we can build on together. I love working with people who are excited to celebrate, open to creativity, and understand that a great event isn’t just about making a massive playlist and thinking that’s how you get people on the dance floor… No, it’s all about the flow, the transitions, and those big moments that make people say, “Wow!!”
When a client gives me the space to do what I do best while collaborating on the details that matter to them, that’s when the magic happens.
