We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kenzie Schrock a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenzie, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.
Overcoming imposter syndrome happened for me when I realized that everyone has their own style & my unique style was a strength rather than a weakness.
For a long time, I was always looking at everyone else’s work, comparing and not feeling good enough because my images didn’t exactly match what I was seeing or what was trending at the time. It was hindering my ability to go out and just do what I love, how I love to do it. I knew I had to change my mindset if I wanted to be happy and ultimately, successful.
I came to see that my individuality was what sets my work apart and makes it special. Instead of comparing myself to others, I embraced my personal style, focusing on the details that I believe make my photographs unique—whether it was the emotive storytelling or the way I played with light and shadows. It was my art.
Having a supportive community and amazing friends in this business also helped to validate my feelings and boost my confidence. This allowed me to celebrate my creativity and originality, which helped to melt away the heavy burden of imposter syndrome & allowed me to be able to enjoy my work and form a deeper connection with my photography.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Photography has been my constant companion for as long as I can remember. In fact, I enjoyed it as a hobby for 7 years before going professional. It’s more than just a profession to me though; it’s an art form that allows me to freeze time, preserve memories, and evoke emotions through every frame.
With years of experience behind the camera, I’ve had the privilege of documenting weddings, families, landscapes, and everything in between. Each photograph is a unique story, a piece of art that I pour my heart and soul into creating. My photography style is a blend of lifestyle, emotional and sometimes traditional, and I’m always on the lookout for that perfect play of light and shadow that brings magic to every image.
Beyond the technical aspects of photography, my passion is the connections I make with people. I believe that the best photos are the ones where you can feel the emotions and relive the moments. That’s why I take the time to understand your vision, your personality, and your story, ensuring that each image I capture reflects your genuine self.
When I’m not behind the camera, you can find me running the household, hanging out with my two sons, my husband & my golden retriever, Millee. I also enjoy spending time with the rest of my family and close friends. When I am not doing any of that, you can catch me at baseball practice/games, as both my boys play!

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The best thing I did for myself was research, education & practice, every chance I got.
If you are just starting your photography journey, my advice would be to learn the insides and outs of your camera, learn how to adapt to all forms of light in any scenario, keep growing & always practice! Do not be afraid to think outside of the box. You are the artist, really let your creativity show through on your images.
Let go of the idea of perfection and experiment with your images. Grab your family, friends, kids, dogs or even just go out into nature and practice. It is the best way to learn. Enough practice and you will be able to know exactly what you need to do, when you need to do it! Don’t give up!

What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
Social media. It is so amazing & the most effective way to grow your business now. Let’s be real here though, it can be exhausting.
It’s always changing. You have to post at certain times, certain ways with trending hashtags, reels, etc. It almost feels like more work than taking/editing pictures! Putting yourself out there for the world to see can be so scary as well.
I think overcoming the fear I have of being vulnerable online is to convince myself to just do it. Be aware that not everyone is going to think the way I think, see the way I see & that’s perfectly okay! We are all unique individuals. I have to shift my mindset that I am posting for me & if it works out, then great! It’s a daily practice.
You won’t know unless you try!
