We were lucky to catch up with Keriane Zarcone recently and have shared our conversation below.
Keriane, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
“Being successful when I am the only person in the group that looks like me” is a day in the life for me! I take a lot of pride in knowing I do not look like the average person and to be honest, I do feel like I have to work harder to prove my professionalism and to build my business but that is not a bad thing. It taught me how to hustle and provide for myself, so as others may find this to be a challenge, to me it is a gift and I wouldn’t wish it was any other way.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I created Onyx Hair Company when i rebranded my business after covid. I named my business after the healing stone Onyx. Onyx is a powerful protective stone, believed to absorb and transmute negative energies into positive energy and balance harmony within the mind, body, and soul, encouraging emotional healing and a sense of inner peace. This really resonates with my purpose and intentions as a hairstylist. I know my purpose in life was to be a light and ray of sunshine in people’s lives. I am the self-proclaimed cycle breaker and the emotional support that clients need. There is no other feeling in the world like giving someone the ability to love the person they see in the mirror. Our hair is our identity and the outfit we never take off, so I take it very seriously!
My passion for my career is something I am very proud of! This is my 18th year as a hairstylist and my career has always been the most stable and consistent part of my life, so I protect it with every inch of my being. I truly believe when you pour your heart and soul into your passions, they will always reward you in abundance. I do so by spending my free time continuing my education and finding ways to enhance my workspace. My days at my studio entail creating custom hair extensions and hair coloring services, and when I get to do both at the same time, I am euphoric.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The 3 most impactful qualities and skills of my journey would have to be drive, authenticity, and the ability to notice growth and to do something about it.
If I could give anyone on their journey on how to work with these skills, it would have to start with authenticity. One thing I have noticed is how rare authenticity is in our world. Being yourself and loving all the weird and amazing things about yourself is so important on an independent journey. Once you have that confidence in yourself, becoming driven is usually manifests naturally from that, which is needed to have for personal growth. When you’re driven , growth happens pretty consistently, but you have to notice when that is and give yourself the opportunity to find space for your expansion.
In independent-based careers, you have to be the one to promote yourself. Metaphorically speaking in my career, a fear of mine is becoming “root bound”. When a plant is root bound, its roots have become excessively tangled within its container, restricting further growth. This leads to stunted growth, wilting, and even death of the plant if left unaddressed. In my opinion, ignoring your own personal growth is a secret self-sabotaging behavior!

Who is your ideal client or what sort of characteristics would make someone an ideal client for you?
For me, an ideal client would be someone who has trust in me based on my consistency and progression of my work. I always say every appointment is going to be great, but the next one will be even better—I’m always improving and/or learning something new. At every appointment, there will usually be a new and exciting product or technique that I’m way too excited about and can’t wait to show them!
