We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kert Lasdoce. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kert below.
Hi Kert, appreciate you sitting with us today to share your wisdom with our readers. So, let’s start with resilience – where do you get your resilience from?
We have gotten it from our parents. Raised as immigrants we knew the struggles and grit from our home countries. I, Kert Lasdoce was born in the south part of the Philippines. Born from a lower class financial standing, both of parents are teachers and have persevered in their respected careers.
My Mom was a home-economics teacher and has instilled in me the passion and love for cooking/baking. My father was a math teacher who moved heaven and earth to provide for his family and was able to get a job in New York as a math teacher in the Bronx.
Growing up we did not had much, just enough to get our daily meals and a roof over our heads. As a kid, I have dabbled into the road of entrepreneurship and cooking. I have made my own glazed nuts and purchased candies and sold it at school to get extra income to help out with our school supplies. This has definitely has helped me created the sense of independency and fostered my grit from rejection.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
My name is Kert Lasdoce. I am the Chef and Co-founder of The Boiis Co., a Filipino-owned mochi bakery that’s based in Queens New York. We create delicious treats that are made with mochi (rice flour). We specialize in bringing in our cultural flavors and techniques in making unique desserts that are not as sweet to the palate.
Our goal is to be one of the must visit places in New York City for the holidays. As we have become a staple in the Union Square Holiday Market starting on November-December and for the first time ever we are participating in Bryant’s Park Winter Village starting in October-January. Please visit us this holiday season and have a winter mochi experience by grabbing mochi goodies from our booth!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
-Ask questions and Seek Help
You will be surprised how other people are willing to help or give 10-15 minutes of their time coaching you or answering questions. You just have to be patient.
– Learning to delegate
This is still an ongoing skill I am trying to acquire. As a business owner, you will be forced to wear many hats. Be it because of budget constraints or you yourself have a hard time letting go of control but as time goes on, you will need to let go of control so that you can scale and also focus on the growth.
– Taking a pause/break
As the business grows or slows down, sometimes we need to be able to have the ability to take a step back, re-assess and refocus. often times when things are going well, we try to scale as fast as we can without looking at the trajectory, being able to look at the hard facts and decide what to do moving forward. This also goes vice versa when things are going south/bad.
Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?
It might sound a bit philosophical but God definitely has been a big shift in our way of thinking. leaning into religion or to a higher form of being has given us a form of peace of mind that enables us to be calm about things we can’t control.
This mindset has allowed us to seek help and be blessed by being surrounded by like-minded individuals and mentors alike in the same field we are in. We seek wisdom from our business friends who have been in the industry for awhile or are in the rise in their entrepreneurship journey.
My own co-founder Rivy-major Oponda has also been a major instrument of how The Boiis Co. has turned out to be for the last 4-5 years. Building a brand from the ground up was no easy task specially when we have so much limited resources as we have bootstrapped the business with our own funding. She has turned The Boiis Co. into a brand that has so much potential for the next 10 years.
