Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Keshia Langston . We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Keshia, so excited to have you with us today, particularly to get your insight on a topic that comes up constantly in the community – overcoming creativity blocks. Any thoughts you can share with us?
Creative blocks is the most irritating and frustrating thing to face as a writer. It comes at the most random times and tends to stay longer than welcomed. It’s not easy getting past it, especially when you are on a deadline.
I tend to face creative blocks often, more often than I would like to. Whenever I face creative blocks, I take a reset. I go back and read what I wrote so far. Whenever I do that, it always gets me past my creative blocks. It allows me to refresh and inspire my creative vision. New ideas always come to mind whenever I go back and read what I wrote so far. It gives me the motivation and inspiration I need to move forward.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Writing has been my passion since I was 13 years old. It was something I knew I always wanted to do and something I always knew I would be good at. I love creating and telling amazing stories. I enjoy seeing readers enjoy my work so much. It gives me the best and most indescribable feeling.
Every year I set a goal for my writing career. My goal for 2023 was to publish 3 books. I accomplished that goal December 31st. My goal for 2024 is to write a script, publish an audiobook, and publish 2 books. So far I have completed half of my goals. I am excited for the projects I am working on and future endeavors.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Creativity, dedication, and passion are the qualities and skills that are very important in my journey. I wouldn’t have made it as far as I have in my career without those skills and qualities. I am very dedicated to my craft in every way. Being the best author and writer I can possibly be feeds into my love and passion for what I do.
My advice to anyone would be, stay focus and follow your dreams. Only you can make your dreams come true in the way you imagine it. Believe in yourself, ignore your fears, and chase after your dreams.
Before we go, maybe you can tell us a bit about your parents and what you feel was the most impactful thing they did for you?
The most impactful thing my father has done for me is, believe in me. He knew writing was my passion and I loved to do it. When I was 14 or 15, he got me my very first typewriter. At the time I didn’t know much about typewriters other than it was loud. I think it got on his nerves hearing me type on it so much. Shortly after that, he put a computer in my room. I loved being able to be in my own creative bubble writing with no distractions. Everyday I would sit on my computer for hours after school writing.
My father ordered my first book against my wishes. I knew he wanted to support me, but I didn’t want him to read what I created. He called me saying, “I’m trying to do what’s in chapter 8”. In that very moment, I didn’t want my father reading nothing else I wrote. He always trying to give me book ideas. He said “I have idea for your next book. Call it 50 Shades Of Black”. I couldn’t do anything but laugh.
The more I accomplish in my writing career, the more he tells me not to forget about him when I blow up. He has supported my dream and believed in me since I was 13 years old just entering poetry contests. Even when I didn’t fully believe in myself, he made sure he believed in me enough for the both of us. I tell him all the time, I could NEVER forget about you. When I blow up, you going to be right there with me through it all. His support and faith in me means the absolute world to me.
