Meet Kevin

We were lucky to catch up with Kevin recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kevin, looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

My work ethic was just average through my school years but when I started my company (Stampscapes inc.) I wanted to give it the best chance to survive so I’ve always worked tirelessly in that effort. I’ve always loved what I do and it’s due to the support of the customer(s) and I’ve done my best to fulfill the orders and provide strong product support.

What’s the most exciting about your company?

The most exciting thing about the Stampscapes product line is the level of precision that goes into all of the designs. The product is rubber stamps which are tools of reproduction so, in the hands of the users, my level of illustration/design capabilities become their own. For example, if I’ve designed an image of a covered bridge, someone can stamp out and utilize that exact image by their own hand. In my particular form of artwork, it’s really about the creation of tools for others to express and explore their own creativity without the need for years of art classes/schooling.

Stampscapes is frequently releasing new imagery for people to expand their collection and to investigate new avenues on usage. With each release, new instructional videos are posted for people to follow along with and replicate the techniques shown or to just use the videos for inspiration. At the time of this interview, there are more than 2,300 videos on the Stampscapes YouTube channel free for viewing.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three important things for me have been attitude, industriousness, and flexibility. With attitude, it’s about trying our best and being solution focused and not dwelling on the negative. Then, we need to be productive by working hard and trying to work smart/efficient. Different aspects change at different rates and it’s important to try and recognize these changes as early as possible to adjust accordingly. We want to try and vary our focus on everything from the micro to the macro.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?

I like that saying that goes something like, “If you want to be excellent in anything, you have to try and be excellent in everything.”. What that’s basically saying is that you want effort to just be a way of life instead of something we isolate for only certain things that we do. Pat Riley stated (while he was an NBA coach) that there’s a difference between having an excellent game and having game excellence. The later was based on how one approaches their entire life rather than solely how one puts forth the effort in games only.
