We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kevin Burnett Jr a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive?
It’s actually very simple. You just feed your mind new information in the sense of positive reinforcement. Take rest when you need it or your body will do it for you. At the end of the day just always practice. When it comes to drawing for me there will be times where I don’t have a physical medium in front of me but I’m doing it in my head. With all that said though negative situations can definitely impact creativity because you have that understanding of where you don’t want to be as oppose to where you want to be.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
At the start of the summer I got a group of creatives together and we were able to get out a campaign for the Summer collection from Spicy Champloo. Putting events together like that has always been something I’ve tried to do. It brings a lot of people together in a sense of networking. Each individual representing a node and now with connections to each node just makes us grow. That’s the Philosophy behind it anyways.
I also was blessed with my first born son. I don’t want to get much into it but having him in my life just amplified my purpose and drive. Truly a blessing shoutout to his momma, we did that!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Firstly, I say having some discipline in mind. I’m still working in that field but I’ve definitely come a long way from the 2014 version of me.
Secondly, I wouldn’t focus on what my passion is. More of, am I enjoying this, how does it impact me, and those I consider dear to me. The passion will align itself accordingly.
Lastly, just get around people younger and older than you. See how they spend their days. It’ll help you live more presently in life. Those living in between are so wrapped in their lives they just forget that’s it’s okay to do nothing from time to time. Just get grounded, share a laugh, eat some good food.
I’d like to add one more and I believe this is a really important one and it’s just to move with flow. Often we struggle or resist flow because we have an expectation of what it is we actually want instead allowing things to be what they actually are
Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?
Oh absolutely. For me it would be Time and not in sense of not having enough. I know in the back of my mind I’m where I’m suppose to be. Being an active thinker though keeps my mind on the foresight. Which often causes issues in my present life. That is why I believe being grounded and taking that time to recalibrate is an absolute must.
Being a son, boyfriend, father and friend comes with great responsibilities which takes a toll on you whether you like to acknowledge it or not.
