We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Corte. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Hi Kevin, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
I think it took a lot of self reflection and building confidence in my own uniqueness. As I started working in the entertainment industry, I was quickly convinced that my looks and my abilities, and pretty much my whole identity, were limiting and that I needed to take countermeasures to be competitive in the field, but the reality is that those very same qualities are what makes an artist stand out, especially in today’s media where the niche and individuality are being more and more relevant.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m a Mexican queer actor based in Los Angeles doing TV, Film, Theatre, Voiceover and Commercial work, as well as a performing arts instructor for young actors.
I find a lot of importance in the arts as it is an amazing device for connecting with our humanity and experiencing other perspectives and walks of life; something that, in my opinion, is desperately needed during these very divisive times.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
It’s very philosophical but I would go with discipline, confidence, and honesty.
In a business that is so competitive, one must be ready to face endless rejection and lots of very hard-and-sometimes-unfulfilling work, and having discipline and confidence in your own ability become the only thing that keeps you from quitting, at least most of times.
Honesty on the other hand is more related to the first question you asked on this interview. Being completely true to who you are is possibly the hardest thing a human can do, simply because we will always be influenced by hate and love, making us adapt to survive in our society, but in the arts, what we want to achieve is quite the opposite. Unleashing your most vulnerable feelings and thoughts requires a lot of bravery that can only come from admitting and accepting who we are.

Do you think it’s better to go all in on our strengths or to try to be more well-rounded by investing effort on improving areas you aren’t as strong in?
I’m more of a well roundness person, but I also believe we can always improve so, going all out on your strengths is very valid. Especially in the arts, but in life, things are constantly shifting and I’ve found that constantly learning and evolving can only benefit you to better face the world.
One time I auditioned for a project where they were only looking for Spanish speakers, as the story required people who were fully fluent. At the callback they told me they were specifically looking for Puerto Rican actors since that’s where the character was from… mind you, I’m Mexican… and my accent is Mexican. But I think this is a perfect example of why betting on learning, but also on strengthening is important. I had been working on accents for about 3 years, and I was able to do the accent they wanted and book the part. Later on, I brought up to the director that I’m from Mexico and he decided to change the script for my character to be of that ethnicity.
That was a great lesson for me to keep practicing new skills, but as you can see, you’re strongest skills must always be ready to go, so keep those muscles active!
