Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kevin Garcia. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Kevin, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I have always strived to become the best version of myself, which frequently required putting myself in such situations. A common piece of advice that most people hear is, “comfort is the enemy of progress,” and this holds true in the world of personal development. I really started to understand and embrace this concept once I entered adulthood and my professional career. Roughly 70% of residential real estate agents are white/non-Hispanic, and this percentage is even higher in the commercial real estate industry. When I found myself in rooms filled with mostly people who don’t look like me, I would feel a bit of anxiety and shyness. However, I realized that just because others do not look like me does not mean I don’t belong. It is important to understand that we all bring value to the table, and if we all brought the same value, we would not learn from one another. I bring diversity and a different lens to the way of doing business in my industry. This has helped me find success early on in my career. It is a constant mental uphill battle where we must continually remind ourselves of our value.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Kevin Garcia, and I am a licensed Real Estate Broker serving the greater Southern California area. My expertise spans across working with first-time buyers, sellers, investors, and everyone in between. Over the past five years, I have helped families upsize, downsize, relocate, and purchase second homes or investment properties to add to their portfolios.
Over the past three years, I have developed a niche in the world of manufactured homes. These properties have grown in popularity as a form of affordable housing. The stigma of “trailer homes” or “homes on wheels” is quickly fading, and my team and I are helping to highlight this hidden gem. I have established myself as a leading expert in this field, so whether you are looking to purchase or sell your manufactured home, I am here to help.
What is special about my industry is I get to help families purchase and sell their biggest asset. This is not a simple task so when my clients come to me it’s because they trust that I can get the job done. That trust alone is what motivates me to continue helping as many families as I can.
Purchasing and selling a home is not an everyday occurrence, which is why it is crucial to work with a real estate agent who knows the ins and outs of the process. Working with me, you are not only guaranteed the best service but also gain a lifelong relationship with a dedicated professional. My commitment to my clients extends well beyond the purchase or sale of a home. Years after owning or selling their homes, my clients know they can always reach out to me for assistance. With a vast network of successful and trusted professionals, I am able to connect my clients with the right experts for any need that arises. This lasting support provides peace of mind, knowing they have a reliable resource for any situation that may come up.
I have also recently started my own licensed, bonded, and insured roofing company. This is a local, 100% family-owned business that I cannot wait to share more about with you!
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
These are 3 skills and qualities that have been the most impactful on my journey thus far.
DISCIPLINE
Discipline is the first and most important skill that I have learned to develop. This applies to all aspects of life, which is why I consider it the number one skill you must learn to develop. Life is hard and will only continue to get harder as we progress. Showing up every day with the same amount of intensity and energy will help you find success. There will be days when you do not feel like completing a task or getting out of bed; those days are the most critical ones where the skill of discipline will help you push forward. If you only complete tasks when you “feel” like doing so, you will never make progress. Discipline can be developed by creating small daily habits that compound and snowball into a large positive effect in your life. For example, going to the gym every day, reading 10 pages a day, waking up early, drinking four cups of water every day, and making your bed every morning. These small habits, when executed every day, will have a significant impact on your entire life.
GRIT
GRIT is the perseverance and dedication to continuously move forward despite all odds. It is the relentless drive to complete a task or achieve a goal by any means necessary. There is no shortcut to success in any industry or career; it takes time, dedication, and perseverance to reach the highest levels of success. I believe the best way to build GRIT is to set goals for yourself. These can be any type of goals in all aspects of your life. When I started setting goals, I quickly found myself pushing harder to complete tasks and achieve these goals. Nothing is better than the feeling of accomplishment after reaching a goal.
Another very helpful tip for developing this skill is to set daily attainable goals. Make sure to write down these goals daily, and after you achieve them, check them off your list or cross them out. You will start to notice a compounding effect; daily progress is crucial to achieving long-term success.
CONFIDENCE/SELF BELIEF
I purposely left this quality at the end because there is no short and easy answer to building confidence. Confidence is not something we are born with; it is developed over time through a series of life events and moments. My best advice on building confidence is by developing the skills and qualities I mentioned above. Confidence will come over time from these skills you develop. The reason for this is that you will have accomplished goals that you set for yourself, which can be looked back upon and serve as a measure of success in your own eyes. There is a level of pride and confidence built in yourself when you look back and see how far you have come and how much you have accomplished.
A key important note I will leave off with is that all of these skills and qualities are perishable. If you do not consistently work on and exercise these skills and qualities, they will fade away, and you will have to start over again. Remember, comfort is the enemy of progress. Don’t ever get too comfortable where you end up starting to slip and forget what got you to where you are now.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I am always looking for other highly driven and motivated professionals to network and build with. You never know who you will bump into next that can have a huge impact on your life. I am always looking for like-minded people across different industries who are interested in partnering or bouncing ideas off each other. Whether you are in the world of personal development or entrepreneurship, I am eager to connect with you!
I am also always looking for new mentors to help me further progress in my career and life. Mentors have been very impactful in my life and are the reason why I have found success early on. If you are looking for advice or mentorship, I am here to help in any way I can. I enjoy sharing my experiences and advice with others, as this also helps me reflect on areas of growth that I need to work on.
I can be reached in various ways, including my social media pages, email, phone, and text.
