We recently connected with Kevin Kopkowski and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?
My work ethic comes from a deep love for music and the culture that surrounds it. Being a DJ isn’t just about playing tracks—it’s about digging deep, discovering sounds, and curating experiences that move people. That takes dedication, late nights, and constant learning. Coming up in Tucson’s scene, I saw firsthand that success doesn’t happen overnight; you have to put in the hours, build connections, and stay consistent.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a multi-genre DJ based in Tucson, Arizona, preforming under the name psyd/KWEST. My sets are all about blending different styles to create a unique, immersive experience that takes listeners on a journey. What excites me most about DJing is the power of music to transform energy-whether it’s lifting a crowd into euphoric state, creating deep introspective moments, or forging a sense of unity in the dance floor.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1. Adaptability – Whether it’s reading a crowd, adjusting to a last minute set change, or blending unexpected genres, being flexible is crucial.
2. Musical Intuition – Understanding how to curate a vibe and take people on a journey is essential. This comes from deep listening, not just playing tracks. Experiment with storytelling in your sets and trust the process
3. Community Connection – Music is about more than just playing tracks, it’s about creating experiences that bring people together. Network with other artists, engage with y9our local scene and support others in the industry.
For anyone starting out, stay curious, keep refining your craft, and remember that your unique style is your greatest strength play for the right reasons and opportunities will come.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I’m feeling overwhelmed i tend to focus on what i can control and i redirect my energy to what i can take action on. As a DJ, music can be both an escape and a solution. Mixing tracks, listening to a favorite set or just zoning out with a playlist can help reset.
