We recently connected with Kevin Lowe and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
When it comes down to building our own self-confidence and self-esteem I’m not going to act like I have this all figured out. But from my own life’s experience I feel it comes down to us focusing on two simple, yet essential steps. First and foremost, we must make a conscious effort every single day to not beat ourselves up. We are indeed our own worst enemy. We tell ourselves things that we would never say to our best friend. I want you to begin treating yourself, talking to yourself like you would your best friend. Each morning before you walk out the door, take the extra effort to build yourself up…. Become your own cheerleader!
Once you have that internal conversation switched from beating yourself up to cheering yourself on, then you can focus on the next piece of this puzzle. You have to start showing up!
If you never walk onto the field, you’ll never win the game. I know, it’s easier said than done, but nothing in life worth fighting for comes easy. You have to jump before you are ready! Nike said it best, “Just do it!”
The more you show up, the more times you take the field, the more times you try, you fail, and you try again… Self-confidence, self-esteem, self-worth…. All of that begins to grow inside of you!
Just remember this… It starts as soon as you wake up in the morning. Take control of the internal game, the thoughts that fill your head. Become your own cheerleader! Then, walk out the door, sit down at the computer, pick up the phone, walk onto the field ready to ‘Just Do It’! If it scares you, if you are nervous, if you want to quit before you even try, then all of those are the exact reason why you must do it!
And that is how you go from wondering “Why me?” to declaring, “Why not me! I got this!”
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
When I unexpectedly became blind back in 2003 at the age of 17, I thought my life had ended. Everything I ever loved, ever dreamed about was taken from me in the blink of an eye. What I didn’t know is that moment would become the turning point that revealed my life’s true purpose — a purpose that now guides me forward.
Today, I share that purpose on stages as an inspirational speaker, and through my weekly podcast, Grit, Grace, & Inspiration. I speak to audiences who are feeling the weight of their own adversity — team members navigating change, leaders carrying invisible pressure, individuals questioning if they’ve got what it takes — and I help them find resilience, hope, and renewed belief in what’s possible.
Whether someone is hearing my story from a live audience or through my podcast, my goal is the same: to help them see that setbacks don’t get the final say — they do. Even when it feels like life is giving up on you, you never have to give up on life.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Faith, Family, and Creativity! My Faith and my family have remained the foundation by which I have been able to overcome the unthinkable. Accepting Jesus into my life when I was 12 years old was the greatest gift I have ever been given. I didn’t understand the magnitude of this gift until 5 years later when my entire world would go dark. But through my faith I overcame the darkness. Second to my faith is my family. We were not meant to do life alone, and I am forever grateful for the family God gave me. And to get to learn such a monumental lesson at such a young age is undoubtedly a tremendous blessing. And lastly, I speak to creativity…. Never willing to settle for the normal, the routine. When I became blind I was now being labeled as disabled. I was being put in a box… A box of what is thought to be the norm for someone blind. But through my own creativity I have proved that no such box exists! While most blind people use the typical white cane, I had mine painted blue. While some may have thought all I could do was minor tasks, repetitive tasks, I became an entrepreneur! I opened my own travel agency, I learned to see using echo location! My faith, my family, and my own creativity have gotten me to where I am today!
Before we go, any advice you can share with people who are feeling overwhelmed?
As someone who is always pushing forward, always dreaming bigger, working towards tomorrow, there are times when overwhelm takes hold. For myself, that is a clear indication that I need to not slow down, but rather stop! Stop working, clear my schedule, throw out the to-do list, and focus on doing nothing productive! I pick up the phone and call a friend. I get out of the office, out of the house, and go enjoy the day. There is so much more to this life than the stuff that overwhelms us. We are not meant to be stressed out, overwhelmed, and ready to throw in the towel. We must take time to prioritize having fun, focusing on us, and simply enjoying life.
