We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Marable. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Kevin, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
For a long period of my youth and well into my adult years, I had pursued a career in music. I initially believed becoming a rapper was my true calling and purpose then. Over time I had developed strong writing skills and was blessed with great lyrical ability to the point where I was featured on BET three times (BET Spring Bling Freestyle Battle 03′, 106 & Park Freestyle Fridays, and The Center w/ Julissa), I had a manager, was meeting and opening for some of Hip-Hops elite, and also had record label interest. When that didn’t pan out, I began to shift my focus from being an artist to doing more behind the scenes and wanting to research and showcase other rising talent. I went on to create an online hip-hop magazine which was called BUMP Magazine which BUMP stood for “Best in Urban Music and Promotion. This was at the time where hip-hop websites were virtually non-existent besides AllHipHop.com and SOHH.com. I interviewed a lot of now well known rappers and R&B singers before their rise such as Soulja Boy, Yung Berg (who now goes by Hitmaka), Sean Kingston, to The Clipse, R&B Singer Joe, Crime Mobb, and many more! I was able to grow that website into one of the top 5 hip-hop websites online at the time. I kept that website going for a few years before deciding to end it. I prefaced with that portion of my life because it plays an integral part to the journey of how I ended up where I am today.
Through it all, I never lost the part of myself that wanted to tell stories through my writing and I wanted to find a creative medium where I could continue that journey outside of music. I began to find a sense of fulfillment in writing small scripts until those scripts became shorts and then from writing shorts I began to write and flesh out my own features. Within this part of my journey, whenever I would get stuck or have writers block, I often found myself searching for scripts written by other like-minded writers of color that spoke our language and brought forth our way of life onto the page as a means for inspiration. Through that research, I began to notice that a lot of our stories from some of our favorite films and tv shows weren’t always written by or created and owned by us and there was no sole website dedicated to showcasing, spotlighting, and giving flowers to the black and brown talent in hollywood nor a lot of other underrepresented groups and there’s no website providing any level of information or education as to how they did it. That’s when I initially thought that someone should change that and create a website that at least housed and documented screenplays written by people of color just as there are other screenplay websites. It wasn’t until days later that it dawned on me that I should be the person to create it. This was how the platform TheBlkScript.com came to be.
During the process of creating TheBlkScript, I began to speak on it via social media not realizing the impact that creating such a website would have. Several of my posts went viral on TikTok and before I knew it, I had celebrities, writers, actors, filmmakers, animators, and musicians flooding my messages with praise and and overwhelming amount of creatives asking if I would ever consider options for them. Ultimately, this made me realize how much of a void and disconnect we have to figuring out how to get into the television and film industry and how to get our talent discovered so that more of us can get through the door. At that point, I set my aspirations as a screenwriter to the side and began the mission of developing solutions to resolve all of these requests without looking back. I felt and still strongly feel that this is what I’ve been called to do. Utilize the talent God gave me, to help and serve others because the mission is way bigger than me. Currently TheBlkScript.com offers entertainment news from our perspective, screenplay submissions for writers, film submissions for filmmakers, and a new talent discovery platform called Blind Sides that will inevitably change the way actors and writers are discovered moving forward.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
TheBlkScript.com is a platform dedicated to help actors, screenwriters, and filmmakers of color gain more opportunity within TV and Film industry by providing a level of exposure, education, entertainment, community, and resources unlike any other website or platform that exists on the web today. The platform was created and founded by Kevin Marable, an aspiring screenwriter and creative that discovered the need to fill a void and desire to showcase the vast black and brown talent base that already exists as a means of preservation and also the rising talent our culture has to offer. Kevin began building this platform on February 15, 2023 and has been diligent in his efforts to make it become a successful business, resource, and tool that will help generations to come who want to know all that it takes to “make it in the industry.”
His partner, Jessica “Jess” Mifflin, joined TheBlkScript representing other rising actors and is currently on board as PR/Media and new talent acquisition. Since joining, she has been a strong force behind helping the platform land major talent for it’s podcast, Blk Storytellers, as well as handling correspondence, meetings, and other behind the scenes tasks with actors, writers, filmmakers and other industry insiders. She has been a pivotal piece to TheBlkScripts overall visibility, awareness, and growth.
Together we are pushing the platform forward relentlessly in order to achieve success in being a valuable source of information and opportunity organically for the culture. They are also launching a new talent discovery platform called Blind Sides™ which will leverage their audience and reach to provide more spotlight on both actors and writers to be showcased online within the social media space and beyond.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The qualities that have been most impactful for me in my journey have been patience, staying dedicated and loyal to the cause, showing the respect of being a student to every aspect of this business. I understand that there’s a lot that I don’t know but I work towards growth each day so that way I can become and remain effective in making real change in how things are implemented within the industry as well as on the independent side. You’d be surprised how much more is given when you’re in the position to listen.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes, we are always open to partner and collaborate with where it makes sense. Right now we are working on beefing up our team in areas that could make us stronger such as more entertainment news writers, moderaters for our network, regional ambassadors and influencers etc.
Right now we are seeking investors, and sponsors who would love to be a part of creating change, discovering new talent, and shifting how we educate ourselves on how to get into this industry.
