Meet Kevin May

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin May. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.

Kevin , thank you so much for joining us. You are such a positive person and it’s something we really admire and so we wanted to start by asking you where you think your optimism comes from?

My optimism comes from witnessing the power of community events to transform people’s lives. I’ve experienced it personally on many occasions and also heard countless stories from friends who I’ve met at concerts, Song Circles, Ecstatic Dance and Transformational Festivals.

Recently I reconnected with a friend named Adam, whom I’d met at a Transformational Festival a few years earlier. He and his family came to Pittsburgh to attend a concert of healing music, which I helped organize. It was also their first time participating in a sacred cacao ceremony. During the music, Adam had a huge smile on his face while he was dancing with his 5 year old daughter. He also lovingly comforted his partner Mykayla who was 8 months pregnant at the time. After the concert he came up to me, filled with gratitude and expressed how moved he was by the whole evening.

It was such a healing experience for him and his whole family, and allowed them to express authentic joy and connection in a community setting. I told him that I would be leading a Song Circle in his area in the near future. The whole family came and once again had a wonderful time co-creating music. They were all very grateful to be a part of it, and before he left, Adam said something which really stuck with me : “Please don’t ever stop doing this. People really need this!”

Feeling the depth at which these two events impacted him and his family will serve as motivation for me to continue organizing family friendly community events, which can bring more hope, joy, connection and optimism to this world.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am very passionate about supporting both personal and collective transformation. I believe that change only happens when we SHIFT OUR STORY. And then the journey becomes actually embodying the New Story on a day to day basis. I love to help people embody their new story through my 1-on-1 Personal Development Coaching, as well as transformational community events like Song Circles, Immersive Workshops and Festivals.

There are so many amazing possibilities to tap into, both personally and collectively, and it starts with shifting the stories we tell ourselves, so we can experience more harmony, balance, connection and love.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

There are 3 key skills which have been pivotal in my journey of being a skilled Coach and Song Circle Leader :

1. Self Awareness – My personal state of being – physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually makes a huge impact on how well I can hold space for 1 person or a whole group. I do my best to cultivate a grounded, embodied and harmonious state, before I show up in service to others. This empowers me to be more in tune with anyone I am interacting with, and easily able to support them in whatever areas they want to expand in.

2. Facilitating Group Coherence – In 2010 I rode my bicycle across America with a team of 5 riders. We faced many challenges along the 6 month journey, and it required us to enhance our communication skills, conflict resolution, and planning skills. This journey was the beginning of my 15 years of facilitating community events. Over the years I have learned from many mentors, sometimes directly, sometimes simply through observation. It is a superpower I’ve honed over the years – to help everyone find a collective state of coherence, which allows each person to feel more at ease, and more connected to the whole group.

3. Growth Mindset – I choose to believe that I always have more to learn. I call this planet the Earth School, and within it, there are always new lessons and blessings to uncover, especially when I am in a teaching or facilitation role. The journey is always about refinement, integration of lessons learned, and having grace for oneself in the process.

Alright, so before we go we want to ask you to take a moment to reflect and share what you think you would do if you somehow knew you only had a decade of life left?

I would spend it facilitating incredible community Song, Freestyle and Music circles, and recording the sessions, so that people can enjoy them for generations to come. I would also continue to make videos which blend humor, empowerment and actionable wisdom, to hopefully inspire thousands of people far into the future!
