We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kevin Valderrama-Garcia. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kevin below.
Kevin, so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
I believe that I found my purpose by simply understanding where I come from. I do not think that we are on this earth to just work a job we hate for the rest of our lives. I know that we are supposed to find something that we truly love doing so that we can inspire others and have future generations looking up to us. I come from hardworking immigrant parents who gave up everything they had so I could have a better life. I truly look up to my parents, and everything they did for me only inspires me to try and change the cycle. I want to achieve things past generations of my family never could. I also want to see progress so that when I have my kids, they can have it better than I did. I believe that is what life is ultimately about. We have to progress and reach new heights while doing the things we love. For me, all of this brings a lot of joy, and I feel like nothing can get in the way of my purpose. I am determined to learn as much as I can for as long as I can to truly become the best version of myself.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I am currently heading into my senior year at San Diego State University. I am majoring in Television, Film, and New Media Production. I hope to one day become a cinematographer, editor or work in television, specifically in sports. I am also a recreational photographer, and I take pictures of scenes that look interesting to me. I have traveled to a few places and have experienced new things thanks to the love I have for this hobby. Recently, I have been interested in creating portraits that tell stories. I get inspiration from some of the music I listen to. Creating stories is something I enjoy doing, and photography seems to be one of the best ways to do it. I want to keep improving and find ways to be better every time I pick up my camera.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Work ethic, perseverance, and being optimistic have been the three qualities that have helped me grow and reach new heights. I have always seen these three qualities in my parents, and I have learned that these qualities are crucial to, in the end, live a happy life. It took me a while to find myself, but I am glad I never gave up so easily. I am grateful for how far I have come and how much I have learned along the way. My advice for those who are early in their journey is to always be yourself, be kind and be great.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle that I am currently facing and have probably faced my whole life is not having enough confidence at times. I have always been someone who has cared a lot about what others may think of me. I believe having the right amount of confidence is all I need to really thrive. Caring about small, irrelevant things can really slow someone down and it can also be a waste of time, but we have to realize that these things do not matter and are simply forgotten at some point. I try to put myself in uncomfortable situations on purpose in order to overcome this. I know that meeting new people and going through those awkward moments are simply part of the process to become better. We are all in the same boat, and I know I am on the right path to overcome anything that comes my way.
