We recently connected with Kevin Wachira and have shared our conversation below.
Kevin, thrilled to have you on the platform as I think our readers can really benefit from your insights and experiences. In particular, we’d love to hear about how you think about burnout, avoiding or overcoming burnout, etc.
Burnout is a challenge I’ve faced head-on in my journey as a creative and entrepreneur. For someone who thrives on productivity and being “locked in,” it can be tempting to push beyond limits in pursuit of progress. However, I’ve learned that burnout doesn’t just slow you down—it can lead to setbacks that require even more time and energy to recover from.
One of the turning points in avoiding burnout was realizing the importance of balance and pacing. I started to implement routines that prioritized my well-being alongside my work. This included setting boundaries for work hours, intentionally unplugging, and dedicating time to activities that recharge me.
A specific moment that stands out was during a period of intense growth and rebranding for my business. I was juggling multiple projects, traveling to collaborate with clients, and expanding services. The workload was exhilarating but overwhelming. I started experiencing creative blocks and mental fatigue, which was a wake-up call. I realized that staying “locked in” 24/7 wasn’t sustainable.
To address this challenge, I adopted habits that help me stay energized and focused. I began practicing mindfulness, creating a structured daily routine, and delegating more tasks to my team. Additionally, I started treating rest as a non-negotiable element of my strategy. By prioritizing rest, I have been able to return to my work with a clearer mind, better ideas, and increased efficiency.
Burnout is still something I stay vigilant about, but the key lesson for me has been understanding that productivity doesn’t mean constant motion. Sometimes, stepping back is the most productive thing you can do.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
At Produce Section Creative, we specialize in creating innovative and personalized solutions for creatives, businesses, and brands aiming to leave a lasting impression. As a boutique creative agency, our offerings span branding, product design, video production, event production, and clothing capsule collections. We also help clients strategically connect with their audiences through engaging social media campaigns and content creation.
What sets us apart is our dedication to merging authenticity with innovation. We focus on crafting narratives that deeply resonate with our clients’ audiences while delivering visually impactful and strategically sound results. Every project is approached as a true collaboration, where we work hand-in-hand with clients to bring their visions to life and elevate their brands.
One of the most exciting aspects of our work is our clothing capsule collections, where we blend storytelling and design into limited-edition, wearable pieces. These collections, along with our expansion into immersive event production and innovative digital solutions such as NFTs and licensing opportunities, showcase our ability to stay ahead of industry trends and push creative boundaries.
As we grow, our focus remains on scaling the business and collaborating with forward-thinking partners. We intend to launch new capsule collections, host events, create more content, and expand our service offerings to empower even more brands and creatives. Produce Section Creative isn’t just an agency—it’s a movement driven by passion, creativity, and a commitment to helping others shine. The journey so far has been remarkable, and we’re excited about the opportunities on the horizon.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back, three key qualities and skills have been most impactful on my journey: adaptability, creative problem-solving, and strong relationship-building.
1. Adaptability
The ability to pivot and adjust to changing circumstances has been crucial, especially during periods of uncertainty, like the rebranding of Produce Section Creative during the pandemic. Industries evolve, trends shift, and challenges arise unexpectedly, but staying flexible and open to change has allowed me to stay ahead. For those early in their journey, I’d recommend embracing challenges as opportunities to grow and learning to view setbacks as moments to recalibrate rather than stop progress.
2. Creative Problem-Solving
Creativity isn’t just about designing—it’s about finding innovative solutions to any problem, whether it’s budget constraints, project roadblocks, or tight deadlines. For me, this skill has allowed the agency to bootstrap its way to self-sufficiency while still delivering exceptional results. My advice is to develop a mindset where you see problems as puzzles to solve. Practice thinking outside the box, seek inspiration from diverse sources, and lean into collaboration to generate fresh ideas.
3. Relationship-Building
No journey happens in isolation. Building meaningful connections with clients, collaborators, and peers has been a cornerstone of my business. These relationships not only create opportunities but also provide a support system during challenging times. For those starting out, prioritize genuine communication and trust. Be reliable, show gratitude, and don’t hesitate to reach out to mentors or peers for guidance and collaboration.
The key takeaway for anyone starting their journey is to invest in yourself and your relationships. Be open to learning, push your creative boundaries, and always prioritize authentic connections. These qualities will not only help you build your skills but also sustain you through the inevitable highs and lows of your journey.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
The number one obstacle we are currently facing is scaling. As a growing creative agency, the demand for our services and the potential for expansion are clear, but scaling requires resources that go beyond our current capacity. To overcome this challenge, we are exploring partnerships with external funding sources that align with our vision and values.
We’re actively seeking support from angel investors, crowdfunding opportunities, venture capitalists, endorsements, and sponsorships. These partnerships will provide us with the resources to build a larger, more dynamic team, take on larger-scale projects, and release more merchandise pieces through our capsules.
Scaling is not just about growth—it’s about realizing the full potential of what Produce Section Creative can offer. With the right funding partner, we’re confident that we can elevate our work to new heights and make an even greater impact in the creative and business communities
