We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Key a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Key, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
I think keeping and maintaining creativity can be hard, especially as an adult. The most important thing for me to do is try to keep a childlike outlook on life. What I mean by that is, when i’m outside walking to the metro or just around DC, I’m always looking at life with a sense of wonder. Wondering how a graffiti artist got so high to make their artwork, looking at the architecture of buildings and the shape of them and asking myself “how can i use something like this in my own designs?” or “what function does this serve and how can i simplify it or make a way to use it in designing clothing.” whether it be a certain shape of window/door etc.
Also people watching, I work at a bar/restaurant and get to meet and see so many different characters of people. I like to ask them questions of how they got their style or what made them choose something it really helps with knowing what others would/wouldn’t want to wear.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Eyewuh is a sustainable fashion brand, with the focus of mixing old styles in a new way. Here at Eyewuh history is very important, the knowing of why certain trends started and what has lasted through the centuries/decades. What I like to do is mix styles from the early 1900s- to present time. Using different kinds of fabrics to create textures that i think are unique and creating pants/jackets/sweaters with an older feel to them, I love to see my clothing worn by young and older people. Clothing that transcends age is extremely important and a bit rare in my opinion, when someone who’’s in their sixties/fifties or even seventies can say “this brings me back to my youth” or “i can see myself in this” it’s a great feeling for me.
It’s also extremely important to be able to create garments that also help people feel good about themselves. I get a great sense of pride when someone tries a piece on and you can see their entire being brighten up and relax. It’s a super power and that’s really the special stuff that comes from all of this.
In the future, I hope to expand the brand by doing pop up events and more fashion shows. I’m not much of a social media person but i’d like to try and get more videos up of the process in making the garments, why i choose certain material etc. For now Im focused on perfecting the craft of sewing. Learning new skills, trying new materials and techniques such as smocking and different ways of pleating.
As of right now you can find my brand on instagram @eyewuh or my online store eyewuh.univer.se.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
The most impactful skills for me personally was that i went to school for construction management, so understanding shapes and angles was a bit easier for me when it came to making garments. The other was knowing someone who could teach me the basics of sewing… if you don’t have anyone like that it’s okay! youtube has been my best friend throughout this journey and reading fashion books. The last thing and most important is imagination, if you can imagine something being made you can 100% make it. I think the best advice to give is if you have ideas to make them! skill comes with time, the more you try the better you get and to stay curious always ask questions even if it seems “dumb”.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking to collaborate with others and expand the brand out. I think the ideal person to connect with for me is anyone that wants to make cool stuff. I’m not exactly picky on who I work with, if we love each others work and there’s a way to mix our styles i say let’s do it! Connecting with me is pretty easy my DMs on instagram are always open and my email is up on both my website and instagram account. If you want a more direct way email me at: [email protected]
