Meet Khadejah Durant

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khadejah Durant a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Khadejah, thank you so much for joining us today. Let’s jump right into something we’re really interested in hearing about from you – being the only one in the room. So many of us find ourselves as the only woman in the room, the only immigrant or the only artist in the room, etc. Can you talk to us about how you have learned to be effective and successful in situations where you are the only one in the room like you?
I’ve learned how to master this by knowing myself, my purpose and what I stand for. I also think about how much my voice, skill set and representation matters so I can open doors for others to come.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am currently an event planner and decorator of a decor business called Rosee Luxuries, and I am a TV streaming producer at a local station. What’s most exciting about both roles is that I can show up as my authentic self and give original skill sets. My decor business specifically is the most special to me because it was in honor of my late grandmother, who shared the same passion for design and creating beautiful moments for people, which is something I wanted to carry on.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Being Versatile, Being Authentic, and Knowing your worth and value.

The advice I would give to anyone starting off in their career is don’t be afraid to put yourself out there. Don’t focus so much on getting it right, just do it. Your time is now. I would also teach them to never let anyone diminish your worth and value, and the miniute its tested, make your pivot.

To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
The most impactful thing my parents did was send me off to college as a first-time generational college graduate in my family. I attended the illustrious North Carolina Agricultural & Technical State University from 2014 to 2018 and graduated with honors.

Being there, I learned to beat the odds, gain support from people all over, develop the discipline of working hard, and defy statistics that were placed against me. I am truly thankful for my alma mater.

In the meantime, I would love to connect with more creatives, event decorators, and curators with similar mindsets and passions.
