We recently connected with Khadijah Boothe and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Khadijah, thanks for sharing your insights with our community today. Part of your success, no doubt, is due to your work ethic and so we’d love if you could open up about where you got your work ethic from?
I get my work ethic from my mother. As a single mom of 2 I can rarely ever remember her ever complaining about work or being sick. That lady was always doing something.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Hiii, my name is Khadijah but I also go by Kirby. I’m a natural hair stylist and I focus more on color and true textures of the hair. I honestly fell in love with hair in high school.
My friend let me give her “highlights” with box dye in my bathroom when she was over one day and after that it was a wrap. I started dying and cutting my own hair because I thoroughly enjoyed it. After high school I did the normal community college thing and after almost 2 years I dropped out because it just wasn’t me.
After working for a while I felt like I needed to get out and see the world because I love traveling. However, yall know traveling is expensive along with trying to pack up and leave to go somewhere else. So I decided to join the Navy and I left home.
From the first night in boot camp I already knew I wasn’t doing the full 20 years either so I knew I was just doing my 5 years and getting out.
When I got out though I really didn’t have an idea what I wanted to do. Until I really sat there and thought about it, I really could go back to school for hair because I did love it.
Best decision I ever made honestly because the chemistry and everything for hair is so interesting! I love science like a lot, so the fact that I was able to tie the 2 together was amazing!
I started assisting at a curly hair salon called ‘Maggie Rose’ and fell in love with actually shaping curly hair. It’s really therapeutic seeing the shape form in front of you.
After Maggie Rose I turned my garage into my own little personal suite and it was amazing to see what I could accomplish. However, with how much traction I was getting I felt like I needed to go back to another salon and I did.
A couple months later I realized maybe that salon just wasn’t my fit. I decided to get together with my old coworker from Maggie Rose who is also another upcoming independent hair stylist and get a suite together.
Now we both live happily ever after in our own little safe space together!
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back I think the three qualities or skills that were most impactful on my journey were having discipline, determination and flexibility.
Having that discipline gives you the structure you need to push yourself. There’s definitely going to be days where you don’t want to do anything but lay there. You always have to remember the end goal.
Determination I mean it’s really just how bad do you want it for yourself. You can really only trust yourself to do what’s best for you because who knows you better than yourself?
Be as flexible as you can! Soak up everything, ask questions, take the criticism and reflect. It’s all part of the journey and nothing ever really plays out exactly how you want it to. Yes, it’s stressful, frustrating and just overall a pain but the universe always has control. You really just have to put your best foot forward and hope for the best.
How would you describe your ideal client?
My ideal client is anyone willing to listen and actually reciprocate the energy. Yes I can make your hair look good that day. But overall the health of your hair really can’t just be on me.
