We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Khaleel Santiago. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Khaleel below.
Hi Khaleel , so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Knowing that I am one of one is something that bolsters my confidence to be who I am regardless of any room I walk into. My personal ideology is that everyone is special, or nobody is special. I keep that in mind to remember that every person is unique in their own way and has something to offer, including myself. Regardless of anyones physical appearance.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
I produce and song write, I’ve been doing it since I was about 14. The most exciting thing about it is the ability to create something from an empty canvas and make it unique to my sound and style. I’d even say that the most gratifying thing about it. I’ve worked with various artists ranging from hip-hop to R&B and neo-soul and am continuously working on new projects and songs. My main focus right now is just releasing quality music and continuing to establish myself in the music industry.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Discipline, consistency, and initiative are the 3 most important skills I’ve learned to develop not only in music but in life. Doing the things you don’t want to do necessarily feel like doing. Staying at it through the good and the bad, and picking up skills that may not pertain to your craft in that very moment. For instance, learning how to be better at time management and scheduling.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
I’m always looking to work with new people. My goals right now pertain to releasing great music, so I’m always looking for engineers, artists, or fellow producers. Hit me up on my Instagram!
