Hi Khalid , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I grew up in a dysfunctional family environment, born mixed racially so I never was good enough or was accepted or fit in with others. So most of my life I’ve been a loner. It wasn’t until I was a group home facility as a juvenile age 13 year’s old. And I saw a guy one of the staff members named Mr.Muhammed praying or making salat. And I got to asking him questions about his religion and what he was doing that day. And just watched him on a daily basis till I moved to another housing unit. That was the religious practice of Islamic Monotheism. Now again at the age of 16 in a state facility Islam was introduced to me by a brother from the Nation of Islam two different acts and practices. I didn’t accept that religion Islam but chose my attributes of Khalid Rasheed Shadeed after the acronym KRS like the teacher. And so since I was young I didn’t completely willing submit to the will of God as a Muslim should cause I lacked discipline from growing up, tawqa having discernment to fear God(Subpanawatallaah). So it was a lot of growing pains a lot more incarceration most of my twenties, and some of my thirties to do 4 bids in two different states, and become a three time felon. But on my last time in 2017 I just buckled down and studied got my G.E.D. before leaving prison this time. Went to trade school or enrolled 10 days after being released. Graduated first with honors in my class for trade school. Went to college or took up college to get a math course to join the union. I didn’t pass my union test and Co-Void hit I left school. Worked odd jobs due to my background gave PulseTheMagazine a third try Co-Void was hurting my finances personally and business side as well too. I couldn’t get no PPP loans and just wanted to quit and be done with this headache of being sick and tired. So I changed up my strategy for magazine submissions, came up with the idea to do awards to set us apart for other magazines. Threw networking got the word out doing events and show cases at that time only artist or urban. But time progressed and Houston is now the new Hollywood so everything is opened up now. The no’s it’s a few but it’s more yes’s and now I have my own Khalid Rasheed day in Houston September 9th my birthday though I don’t celebrate birthdays. I won a Presidential Lifetime Achievement Silver Medal, also a Congressional Certificate courtesy of Sheila Lee Jackson all because I do it for y’all and for the culture cause I love Houston! Shout out to Old Third Ward!
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
Well if I’m going to be honest with you. I’m focused on rebranding this year with content creation being very selective of events I attend or the content I post now. Since I’m in a different level or status now with the representation of being media for Texas Southern University, Houston Astros, Sugarland Cowboys, and RawNoCutBoxing. I used to just only post breaking news post from the local news in Houston, or other bloggers. Then I started to reach out to different people and ask questions and after a few no’s, I don’t knows, etc. I never gave up so as of today when I’m outside or doing events now. I’m very content because I made the right decision to be in rooms with people that normally would have or give access to the general public or just any type of media outlets. And since my storyline is “For The Culture”. They like and support what I do. Future projects right now you catch me at any Texas Southern sports event from baseball, softball,volleyball,bowling,etc.. On June 3rd I’ll be graduating with three certifications from Texas Southern University. April/May issue from PulseTheMagazine. In August ForTheHMagazine will be celebrating the 2 Year Anniversary and honoring the Pioneer and Legend’s of Houston Texas such Wreckshop Records, Dope House Records, Swisher House Records, Ronnie Spencer, Harvey Luv, and many more. September 9th my day in Houston idk what I’ll do that day. And to end the four quarter strong the 3rd Annual Female Entrepreneurs Awards 23.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Growing up poverty stricken and being incarcerated because it was at those lowest times of not having nothing and just relying sole hardly of Subpanawatallaah, the Qur’an, and Hadiths of the scholars. The only advice I can give someone is to be consistent since we’re living a new era like the ball cap and everything is digital or technology based. Do you post what makes you feel good or bring you purpose in this race and journey that we call life.
To close, maybe we can chat about your parents and what they did that was particularly impactful for you?
Giving me life last year before my father passed he got sick from Co-Void and soon as I heard I went to the hospital and stayed there on my day’s I was able to. I help clean him, feed him, talk and laugh for hour’s on time when he got transitioned to the rehabilitation for hospice. Even on his release date to go back home stayed there till my nieces came to take him to stay with his sister. We would talk frequently on the phone we laugh. He would say I was calling to check up on you or say he was proud of me. For those on the outside looking in in my youth he left the house and was not in my life and I was never really the same the day I found out while speaking to my mother. And for any black kid that brought resentment, anger, hatred, any other feelings I dealt with on a daily basis. I used to question myself or my family like why or what did I do that was wrong? So it was his sickness that brought us back together to forget the past and live in the present. Since everything is decreed and will to be that time spent I was being prepared for his release to leave me again this time forever. So a few months had pass since then on December 6th I received the phone call my father passed away and had done so by house fire. So I didn’t get upset nor cry. I gave praise to Subpanawatallaah and made dua that he made it to paradise to be amongst his ancestors.
