We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khalil Warner a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Khalil, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Finding my purpose is often a journey of uncertainty, curiosity, and exploration. For me, discovering my purpose was like piecing together a puzzle. Each experience, whether a success or a challenge, became a critical piece that helped form a bigger picture of who I am today. Here’s my story:
Growing up, I was always fascinated by how things worked. I loved taking things to break them down beyond surface level and putting them back together to see if I could improve them. This curiosity led me to dive deep into the world of technology and eventually pursue a career in tech. I started coding in high school, which became a way to express my creativity. Every new programming language I learned felt like acquiring a new superpower, allowing me to bring ideas to life.
But my journey to finding my purpose wasn’t just about tech. Another side of me was drawn to fashion—the aesthetics, the self-expression, and the confidence that comes with wearing something that feels right. I found that fashion and tech, though seemingly different, were both avenues for creativity and storytelling. As I began to model, I saw how clothes could tell a story and how a person’s style could reflect their journey and identity. I realized I didn’t have to choose one path over another; I could blend it.
The challenge was figuring out how to balance these two worlds—tech and fashion. At times, it felt like I was torn between two passions as if I was trying to be two different people. But every challenge was an opportunity to learn something new about myself. I began to see patterns in how I approached problems and projects in both tech and fashion. The meticulous attention to detail I used for writing clean code was the same attention I used to perfect a look for a photoshoot.
Over time, I realized my purpose was not about fitting into a single category but embracing my passions’ intersections. I wanted to show that creativity isn’t limited to one field and that you can be both technical and artistic. I started to see how my background in tech could make me a unique voice in the fashion industry and how my work as a model could inspire others in the tech community to embrace their creativity.
This journey taught me resilience and the importance of authenticity. It also made me passionate about helping others who might feel like they don’t fit into a single box. My purpose became breaking boundaries, blending disciplines, and encouraging others to pursue what genuinely excites them—even if it doesn’t fit the typical mold.
Finding my purpose wasn’t a moment of clarity but a series of discoveries that made me realize that my identity could be a fusion of different worlds. The more I embraced that, the more confident I became in my path. It’s an ongoing journey, but I now feel like I’m exactly where I’m supposed to be—at the intersection of tech, fashion, and creativity, helping to shape a space where all those elements can coexist.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m Khalil Warner, a tech enthusiast and fashion model from Augusta, Georgia, navigating the intersection of two fields I’m passionate about: tech and fashion. As a front-end software engineer, I craft seamless, visually appealing digital experiences. At the same time, I’m a fashion model, using clothing and style as a means of self-expression. Blending these two worlds has become my calling, and I’m focused on showing that creativity transcends boundaries—whether on a screen or a runway.
What excites me most about my work is the overlap between technology and fashion. Something is thrilling about the precision required to code a beautiful interface and how it parallels the attention to detail needed to curate a stylish look. Both involve creativity, innovation, and problem-solving. I’m fascinated by how tech can push the fashion industry forward, from wearable tech to virtual fashion experiences, and I love being part of that evolving conversation.
One thing I’d like people to know about me and my brand is that I’m dedicated to breaking down the stereotypes that box people into specific roles. I want to be an example of how you can be both technical and artistic, logical and creative, without compromising any part of yourself. I’m building a brand around embracing this duality and encouraging others to pursue all their interests, even if they seem unrelated.
I plan to work on projects in the coming months, and I’ll launch a fashion-tech blog to explore the latest trends in both industries and how they intersect. I’m also developing a series of virtual workshops aimed at young professionals and aspiring creatives, showing them how they can harness technical skills and artistic vision to shape their careers. These workshops will focus on topics like building a portfolio website, finding your unique style in tech and fashion, and navigating the challenges of being a multifaceted professional.
Additionally, I’m expanding my modeling work to include more collaborations with brands that align with my vision of blending tech and fashion. I’m interested in sustainable fashion and how technology can aid in making the fashion industry more eco-friendly, so I’m looking to partner with brands innovating in this space.
Ultimately, my mission is to inspire others to think outside the box, to break away from traditional labels, and to explore all the passions that make them unique. Whether through code, style, or the stories I share, I want to show that there’s power in embracing all aspects of yourself.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
1. Adaptability
In both tech and fashion, trends and technologies change rapidly. In tech, there’s always a new framework or tool, and in fashion, styles evolve seasonally. Adaptability has been key to keeping pace with these changes without feeling overwhelmed. I’ve learned to approach each new challenge with curiosity instead of fear, understanding that growth often comes from stepping outside your comfort zone.
Advice: For those early in their journey, embrace change and be open to learning new things. Take on projects that challenge you and push you to learn new skills. It’s okay if you don’t feel 100% ready—there’s a lot to gain from figuring things out along the way. Keep an open mind and don’t be afraid to pivot if something doesn’t go as planned.
2. Creative Problem-Solving
Whether it’s debugging a tricky line of code or figuring out how to create a unique look for a photoshoot, creative problem-solving has been invaluable. In both fields, you’re often faced with constraints—be it technical limitations or styling challenges. Finding innovative ways to overcome those obstacles has kept my work fresh and exciting.
Advice: Develop your problem-solving skills by pushing yourself to think differently. Instead of looking for the quickest solution, consider multiple approaches. Working on diverse projects can help you see problems from new perspectives. Practice brainstorming, and don’t be afraid to seek feedback from others—it can lead to creative insights you wouldn’t have thought of on your own.
3. Networking and Relationship Building
Building connections has been a cornerstone of my journey. In tech, networking can lead to mentorship opportunities, partnerships, and insights into the latest industry trends. In fashion, it opens doors for collaborations, exposure, and understanding the industry from the inside. Good relationships have often led me to unexpected opportunities and pushed my career forward.
Advice: Start building your network early. Attend industry events, whether in-person or virtual, and don’t be afraid to reach out to people whose work you admire. Building genuine connections is key—focus on finding common ground rather than making it transactional. Be consistent and engage with your network, even if it’s just sharing articles or insights. Relationships take time to build, but they’re worth the effort.
By focusing on adaptability, creative problem-solving, and networking, I’ve been able to navigate challenges, seize opportunities, and stay excited about my work. For anyone just starting out, these skills are about mindset as much as they are about practice—be patient with yourself, stay curious, and keep building.
