Meet Kham D.

We were lucky to catch up with Kham D. recently and have shared our conversation below.

Kham, we’ve been so fortunate to work with so many incredible folks and one common thread we have seen is that those who have built amazing lives for themselves are also often the folks who are most generous. Where do you think your generosity comes from?

I get my generosity from my family. It seems to be a trait passed down through the generations. My great grandmother was known as a stern, yet giving woman. In the countryside of Jamaica, our family had a farm and was able to produce their own and more to sell. When she would cook, she cooked for anyone who would come by. My grandmother is the same. She opened the door to so many to give them a start in England. If you meet any of my relatives they have their hand open, not to take, but to give. As a family, we care for each other and give generously from our blessings.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I am a traveling hair stylist that is excited about showing the world the beauty and diversity of textured hair with an emphasis on locs. As a former educator and mental health advocate, I aspire to educate clients on the health of hair and create a space that encourages open dialogue so that they thrive from head to heart. Hairstylists are unofficial therapists, so we are granted the opportunity to connect with people on a different level. I’ve been so lucky to have such loyal clients that encourage my traveling and expansion of my brand. In expanding, I plan to launch a product line rooted in the same ethos of growth, health, and community in mind. Each product will be carefully curated as a thank you to the clients/family that have supported me over the years and believed in the vision.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Looking back, the three qualities that were most impactful in my journey were being generous, adaptable, and having structure in my business. Generosity reminded me that what I put out, God would bring back ten fold. Staying adaptable led me to unexpected opportunities and blessings. Having structure kept me focused and managed expectations, knowing that I could always “return to one” when things became unsteady. For anyone new to this journey, I would give the advice to “flow” with the flow. When your clients are telling you their wants, listen. When a door or opportunity that you didn’t plan for opens, go through it. If you hit a block, take a different route. Your business will thrive how it is meant to thrive, and nothing that is for you will miss you. Still have your plan, do the work, and continue to educate yourself, though. That’s your foundation, that’s your “one”, and every business needs a sturdy foundation for the journey.

Okay, so before we go we always love to ask if you are looking for folks to partner or collaborate with?

I would love to continue expanding the Hairbykham family with clients that want their hair to thrive, creatives that want the world to see the “art” in the beauty industry, and business owners that are adamant about bringing luxury and love to those that they serve. If this is you, please don’t hesitate to reach out for an appointment or a chance to collaborate: [email protected] I look forward to it!
