Meet Khambrel Hinson

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khambrel Hinson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Khambrel, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?

Understanding my role in my current area in Gods Plan… I’ve been in a few rooms where I’m the only black student in the room and realized that there was a reason for that years later. Being a 1% is special because after, you’ll see that you have less and less competition from there. I became successful by embracing being the 1st African American to graduate from Arizona State University. This was effective because this prompts people to ask why fashion? Honestly, cloth and sewing is the median I paint with and final product is the canvas. Things may not be the greatest however they have worked for the better. And put me in the room to be a 1%

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

Im a creative director for 2 brands under 1 fashion house. These brands are Khambrel & SAKRED GALLERY. One is ready to wear while the other is made by me from scratch. The concept of SAKRED Gallery is to understand what is SAKRED to you is in you and how you present that to the world makes your gallery. This applies to attire because without a good outfit…personality and presence runs your conversations. The correct wear in the correct setting can literally change people’s perception of you. So continue to shoot for the stars, sun and dreams. Our logo is a mix between higher elements of the sun, stars, and dream catchers. If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

The first skill I would say is sewing. This element put me in a different category of Creative Director. Another thing would be an ideation process. Understanding your own process and what makes sense for this time and project. This was huge because without this you’re free styling with no template. An area I really focused on is Trend Forecasting and how the psychology of life, situation, and weather can affect or influence the way you wear clothes or if you need new ones. If you can forecast the seasons you can do big numbers.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?

Investments and mentorship. If I get the correct guidance in the industry I’ll be way better than I am today. I would like to shadow under one of the greats of today to further enhance my career in not only creative direction but design. I have been inspired and ghost mentored by videos from YouTube and instagram. To list a few Virgil Abloh(R.I.P), Jerry Lorenzo, Kerbito Jean-Raymond, Heron Preston, Salehe Bembury, Pharrell, Matthew Williams, Dapper Dan. The list can go on but Investments would be helpful to be able to have a place to work on my craft at the highest levels to produce work. I’ve been working out of the apartment if you look at these collections I’ve created you would never guess these were made in a home studio apartment.
