Meet Khari Sekou I

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khari Sekou I a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Khari, thank you for being such a positive, uplifting person. We’ve noticed that so many of the successful folks we’ve had the good fortune of connecting with have high levels of optimism and so we’d love to hear about your optimism and where you think it comes from.
We always have the opportunity to make a situation better or worse, depending on how we respond to it. I remind myself that anger, frustration, doubt, pessimism, and other negative emotions only lead to other negative results. Focusing on solutions and staying optimistic is logical and sounds good but is very difficult to do at that moment.

In Seishin Kenjutsu (Spirit of the Sword), we practice changing the atmosphere or element (5 elements – Ground, Water, Fire, Wind, Sky) – going from fire to water and from water to ground. What that means is to change the emotional energy from excited/angry/vicious to calm/relaxed/still. Then we “ground” our energy with breathing and the “earth” element to return to a meditative/Zen state.

I feel like I’ve suffered enough in life so I deserve and choose to be happy. Tony Robbins said he’s going to live in a beautiful state for the rest of his life. That stuck with me. We all go through our own personal challenges but we can still live in a “beautiful state” if we choose. It’s not going to rain every day. The sun will eventually come out. I just have to maintain, be productive, and keep my energy right until that day comes.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m a lifelong entrepreneur. That sounds glamorous but I’ve had to sacrifice, work hard, take calculated risks, learn when to walk away, and invest in myself. My cousin Kenny once said, “only the dreamer can see the dream”. That’s what my path has been about. Faith through adversity. Tenacity. Grit. Resilience.

Warrior Garden is another passion project I started. I’ve studied and practiced martial arts for a little over 30 years. Warrior Garden is a family society of high-ranking martial scientists offering classes in-person and online. I recently founded a hybrid combat system called, “Sekm Maa Warrior Arts”. “Sekm Maa” is from the Ancient Khemetic/Egyptian/Medu Neter language and translates to “True Power”, “One Who Has True Power”, or “One Who Has The Power Of Truth”. We cultivate and tap into that “True Power” at Sekm Maa Warrior Arts through meditation, exercise, and rigorous martial arts training. I’ve been blessed to train with true martial arts masters that have taught me so much. However, I wanted to create a simplified system of modern & ancient combat taught in a comprehensive way. Sekm Maa classes are currently offered twice a week at Warrior Garden. We teach kids 5-15 years old and adults 16 and up. Book your first class free at warriorgarden.net.

Warrior Wardrobe is my clothing line. You will see a lot of the Warrior Wardrobe shirts worn in the promos and Warrior Garden training videos. Warrior Wardrobe aims to honor great warriors of the past and present and share the warrior philosophy with the world. Visit warriorwardrobe.com to view our available inventory.

100 Trillion Ent. is my indie music and entertainment company. I’ve been a conscious hip-hop recording artist since I was a kid. Music is my other passion and is also my therapy. I love to create something new and express myself musically. I stayed independent by choice to preserve my vision and for quality control. “Too much pain to numb down with morphine/too much game to dumb down for mainstream”. Visit 100trill.com to check out what we do and to download some free music.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Meditation, martial arts, and music have been the most impactful in my journey. By going deep within myself in silence I can always find an answer to my problems. The Inner Power always guides me. Martial arts gave me discipline and strength. Discipline is necessary to accomplish anything of value. Music keeps my Inner Child alive and well. Robin Sharma said to “protect inspiration”. Music from the Soul always inspires me to keep going and to bring my uniqueness to the world.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?
My rib was broken in 2007 in an accident. Right now in 2023, I still haven’t completely healed from that injury. It’s a lot to deal with. I spend a lot of money on therapy, chiropractic care, pain formulas, massages, acupuncture, etc. and a lot of time doing corrective/posture exercises. I have to keep my mind focused on the positive and look for solutions while I literally run multiple companies. I often spend my last on my health treatments and funding my companies. Without health, nothing really matters. Someone with a billion dollars and a bad heart will spend the entire billion in order to live. That’s how I feel.

I believe “excellence will always sell” as Earl Nightingale once said. I strive to be excellent in all of my endeavors. One day soon, I will reap the abundant harvest from all of these good seeds I have planted.
