We recently connected with Khary Alexcee and have shared our conversation below.
Khary, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?
I think this is a great question. Believe it or not it it is a great motivator. First I start with the belief that I’m in that room for a reason and that I belong there. Also, I look at it as an opportunity to bring a different perspective.
I am who I am and very proud of it. I think it is a great way to represent others who look like me and have a similar background.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m Khary Alexcee, President of Captiv Creative and Cofounder of Captiv Studios. I started this journey about 10 years ago following my passion for creativity, technology, and making an impact. Over the years at Captiv Creative, we’ve strived to elevate the creative landscape when it comes to commercial film & photography here in Houston and even Texas as a whole.
I can name countless talented people who have left the area because they felt they didn’t have the opportunity they were looking for. Funny thing is we have an influx of people in the creative space from other areas who are also looking for opportunity.
Our mission is to make the biggest impact possible through our work. So partnering with talented creatives and well known brands is crucial. Another priority of ours is building infrastructure that would attract larger scale projects here to Houston through Captiv Studios.
A major way we try to elevate the creative scene here in Houston is through our workshops. We try to have them once a month and make them interactive like our Red Digital Cinema Workshop or our Virtual Production Workshop.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Looking back the 3 most impactful qualities are vision, grit, and willingness to learn and change.
The vision has helped because I have a great idea of the impact I would like to have and how I want it to look. This helps get others on board for the mission when you can articulate what you are building. It also helps you stay focused on your goals and not allow you to become distracted.
Having grit is so important. Sometimes you think growth and progress are linear. There are a lot of ups and downs in the journey. You need to be able to push through the lows. I enjoy these points because it is all part of the journey and will only make you stronger once you push through.
Yes, having vision and grit is important but that doesn’t mean you need to stop learning and be willing to change. I truly think that is what the journey is all about. Learning and growing.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
The greatest growth in the past 12 months is an improvement in general mental health. There have always been stressors in running and starting businesses. There is almost no way around it. There are tools and skills that you can learn that will help you manage this stress.
