We were lucky to catch up with Khern$ recently and have shared our conversation below.
Khern$, so excited to have you with us today. So much we can chat about, but one of the questions we are most interested in is how you have managed to keep your creativity alive.
“Creativity is intelligence having fun.” – Albert Einstein.
I guess one would say it’s a matter of perspective. On one side, how does a tree keep growing? How does a baby turtle know where to go? I create because I’m an artist. It’s what I’m designed for. On the other hand, creativity comes with its fair share of obstacles. It changes, it runs out, and it’s often misunderstood. The depth of an artist is in fact partly dependent on how well they can express their creativity. In short, you could say I keep my creativity alive by keeping myself alive. In every aspect imaginable. I do what I want and I love what I do. I make art that I would enjoy. In a way, my creativity has been kept alive by my desire to love that part of myself.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m an Artist, I’m a businessman, I’m an intellectual, and I’m an enthusiast. My name is Khern$, I got the juice to get you loose.
I come from the San Fernando Valley, straight out of Sylmar to be exact. I make music for people who do what they want and how they want. To be a fan of Khern$ is not so much to be a fan of me, but more so to be a fan of following your dreams. In a time where everything and everyone is trying to direct, shape, or take your individuality away from you, I stand firmly against it. For the majority of my life there have been influences attempting to control how I do what I do. “Go to school”, “go to work”, “get a partner”, “settle down”.. all in the pursuit of happiness.. or so they claimed. It wasn’t till I went out of my way to sacrifice almost everything I’ve ever worked for, that I truly started feeling like I was on the right path.
Recently I’ve released a mixtape called “Under the Influence Volume 2”. In this project I put my own style over some of my favorite instrumentals from a few of my favorite artists. It’s my way of bringing the fun back into the art. Out for free for everyone on YouTube and SoundCloud.
I have also recently released a single featuring Miz.Clover called “This Love”. where we dive into the expression of feelings one may experience upon the initial phases of getting to know someone and falling in love. This song is one of my personal favorites. Out on all streaming platforms.
Currently though, I’ve been setting my sights on bigger events/shows. That led me to planning a huge tour with some very special people. I have Khern$ merchandise coming out and I have a solo EP that I will be dropping in November (under Smoke1 Records) along with a visual project that I will be pairing the project with.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Resourcefulness, strength in character, and the audacity to Dream.
In my experience, these are the things that played the biggest roles in the journey that I’ve traveled thus far. For anyone searching for a reason, a push, or a sign, here it is. Too many people spend their lives making other people happy without reciprocation. There is no shame in that, but there is a problem in putting yourself to the side. Learn what you want, chose what you want, but make sure you are ready to fight for it. Wanting something is just the beginning. The journey starts after you take the first step.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
“Let me embrace thee, sour adversity, for wise men say it is the wisest course.” – William Shakespeare
To say I don’t get overwhelmed would be a disservice to everything I’ve worked to achieve. I think everyone experiences adversity in different ways. I also believe there is no one way to deal with it, but in the toughest moments I try to remember one thing.
“This is what I asked for.”
I think back to the days when I used to stay up late and wish I was where I am now. I welcome everything that comes with this. The universe is very giving, but nothing worth having ever comes easy. That’s what makes the journey an adventure. When I get overwhelmed I simply smile, say thank you, and dive in.
