Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kheru DeFontes El. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.
Hi Kheru, so excited to talk about all sorts of important topics with you today. The first one we want to jump into is about being the only one in the room – for some that’s being the only person of color or the only non-native English speaker or the only non-MBA, etc Can you talk to us about how you have managed to be successful even when you were the only one in the room that looked like you?
Honestly, I’ve learned how to thrive and stand out, even when I’m the only person in the room who looks like me, by staying deeply committed to my craft. I pour myself into my work and I pour the work into me. this allowed me to stand firm with confidence. That dedication has transformed me into a living embodiment of healing—something people can feel the moment I enter the room. That’s been a key part of my success in every space I’ve stepped into.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
Absolutely. Here’s a refined, powerful version of your message that weaves everything together with clarity, warmth, and impact:
—
I’m the founder of *The Healers*, a transformative family-based community that is home to The Healers University, the Healers Marketplace & Apothecary, the Healing Womb, the Healers Clinic, the Healing Ambassadors, and the Healers Embassy.
The world can be a chaotic and overwhelming place—but The Healers University is a sanctuary. It’s a space of safety, growth, and deep healing. Here, we teach self-sufficiency—how to make your own medicine, how to meditate, how to lose weight in a sustainable way, how to open and scale a business, and most importantly, how to live in joy with intention and purpose.
I truly love every part of this work—the good, the bad, and the messy—because we’re human, and that’s what makes healing real. As a child, I was quiet and observant. I studied everything and everyone around me. One thing that became clear to me early on is that pain doesn’t discriminate. It doesn’t matter how much money you have, how beautiful you are, or what car you drive—so many people are silently hurting.
That’s why we’re here. For those who are ready to move beyond survival and into a life of legacy. We help people build new traditions, new ways of living and healing, so that the generations with us—and those who come after us—inherit better, stronger foundations.
We’re more than a healing space —we’re a family. We hold rites of passage for children, men, and women, particularly within Brown communities. Because healing isn’t just about the individual—it’s about the collective. And we’re building something that lasts. We always have events, new offerings, products etc
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Absolutely—here’s a polished and grounded version of your message with strong clarity and tone:
—
Three things that have truly guided and protected me on this journey are my intuition, my ability to actually listen to it, my empathetic nature, and my street smarts. Each of these has played a vital role in keeping me grounded and safe, especially in spaces where people might try to take advantage of your light.
To all healers and aspiring healers: take your time. This path isn’t a race, and it’s not a job—it’s a calling. If you approach it with urgency or treat it like just another hustle, you can easily lose yourself or even end up hurt. Honor your pace, stay aligned, and don’t forget to protect your energy as much as you share it. Your patience is your power! Respect the journey.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
Sounds scary but—One of the most impactful things my mother did for me was give me the gift of independence. She allowed me the space to find myself as a young adult—to explore life fully, with all its ups, downs, and lessons—without standing in my way. She trusted that no matter what I faced, I’d find my way through. That trust shaped me into who I am today.
