Meet Khy Yen

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Khy Yen a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Khy , looking forward to learning from your journey. You’ve got an amazing story and before we dive into that, let’s start with an important building block. Where do you get your work ethic from?

I get my work ethic from watching my parents work so hard everyday so that they can make it in this country. After migrating to the U.S. from Jamaica they had me grow up in America so that I can live a better life. Growing up all you is do watch everyone around you, what I learned from my parents is nothing is going to come to you, you have to be determined and steadfast.

Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?

I’m an artist. What I think is special about making music is the way you can have all these feelings, write them down, add a beat, and you’ve made a song. The only difference between having a journal and making music is your sharing one with the world. I’ve recently dropped a new single called “Chat”, this song is about people that hate on me and I’m basically telling them knock it off. I try to make a song to the exact way I’m feeling in the moment so it sounds as authentic as possible.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Having unwavering faith, being fearless, and being humble are some qualities that have been impactful on my journey. One thing my mother always taught me was that you never know who you’re talking to, be humble and treat everyone the same. My advice to newcomers to music is always the same, get out and network, have no fear.

Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?

I usually get overwhelmed when I’m thinking of so many things I want to do and start feeling like they’re not achievable. So I write down my goals, no matter how small they are and make a plan for how I’m going to achieve each one. Writing things down has helped me so much.
