We were lucky to catch up with Ki Settles recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Ki, really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
I found my purpose because of God. My love for cameras came from my childhood growing up in the church I would film the pastor’s sermons. I was always sitting with the pastor’s dad helping him set up and record whenever i could. God also placed a lot of talented people in my life. A lot of my close friends growing up were other athletes like myself or entertainers. I was always in school plays and would participate in competitions with my school were i won awards for art and other subjects. My whole life has always revolved around God sports and entertainment.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I film memories that can be used for content or kept for sentimental value. I love being a part of special moments whether its capturing a child’s 1st brithday party to working on an independent film. I love the whole process of filming and then editing where i get to turn the special moments into visual art.
I aim to make sure that anyone i do business with is treated with respect and dignity and that they are happy with the service and product they receive. I care about building relationships and having customers return to me rather than just chasing after money.
I am about to launch my documentary series on my youtube channel that will highlight entrepreneurs. I think it is important to share their stories and to show the youth they have so many different options career wise.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
For me having an eye for shots has helped me be able to really catch great angles while filming. I also had great mentors that taught me a lot. You have to be open to learning new things and don’t take offense when you are getting constructive criticism.
My advice is to study your craft and practice. Never be afraid to explore and try new things and also don’t rule out joining up with other creatives and working together.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents have been my biggest support system. They have been here for me emotionally and even financially. They have gifted me with camera equipment and have even loaned me money for my camera gear. Knowing that they are my biggest cheerleaders means Everything to me. They even help promote my business and help in trying to get me clients. They are a Big reason why i go so hard for my company.
