We were lucky to catch up with Kia Dorsey recently and have shared our conversation below.
Kia, thanks for taking the time to share your lessons with our community today. So, let’s jump right in – one of the most essential skills for unlocking our potential is self-discipline. Where does your self-discipline come from?
“I am the one thing in life I can control” is one of my absolute favorite quotes from the musical Hamilton, and it is a true statement. I have no control over anything else in life other than myself, and if there is something I want to accomplish, I am the only person who can make it happen. Others can help along the way, but I am the driving force, and knowing that is what pushes me on a daily basis.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am an actor from Oklahoma and I relocated to LA in 2021. I consider myself to be a big kid, a Disney adult, and in the most positive way I can say this, a huge goofball who likes to have fun. I think the most exciting thing about being an actor is that I get to tell stories and allow audiences to be in touch with their emotions and feelings. I get to connect with other individuals on and off screen and create these stories that will live forever.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Persistence, confidence, and a positive attitude. For me personally, if I didn’t have any of these three qualities, I don’t think I’d get far in my industry.
What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?
My parents have supported me from the very beginning of my journey as an artist. I remember calling them sobbing in college because I was flunking one of my journalism courses while I was pursuing a journalism major. Deep down, I wanted to be a theatre major but decided to fall back on journalism for job security. But I was unhappy, and my parents were extremely supportive in my decision to switch. They never once told me how ridiculous it would be to pursue a career as an artist. To this day, they still support me with everything I do as an artist, and it really means a lot to me to have that support system, especially in this industry.
