We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiara Harris a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiara, appreciate you making time for us and sharing your wisdom with the community. So many of us go through similar pain points throughout our journeys and so hearing about how others overcame obstacles can be helpful. One of those struggles is keeping creativity alive despite all the stresses, challenges and problems we might be dealing with. How do you keep your creativity alive?
The best way l have found to keep my creativity alive is by trying new crafts. I have an abundance of different item for various craft projects. With my career as a manicurist I have to be creative to come up with new designs, and sometimes I just don’t have it in me to be artistic, but those days are far and few between. I enjoy multiple different crafts from crocheting, painting, jewelry making, making bath and body products, and so much more. Having more than one creative outlet helps me stay creative for my clients.
Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?
I’m a nail technician. That may sound simple, however it isn’t. Being a nail technician means being several things at once to me. I’m an artist, therapist, hype man, assistant , or even just a listening ear. I strive to be whatever my clients may need to help them better enjoy their nail experience with me. The best part about doing what I do is making my clients feel better about themselves by simply making their nails beautiful. I want everyone who sits in my chair to have a fun and positive experience with me and as laugh and make beautiful nails.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Three qualities that I feel are important in my journey are having confidence, determination, and patience. Being self employed is a test of faith. There are times in my career that I’ve doubted if I was making the right decision to be a nail tech. As I’m sure every self employed person has moments of self doubt, having the confidence to believe in not only myself, but also my craft has helped my career tremendously. Having the determination to better myself to make my business successful was also important. I’m always taking a new class or seminar to help build my skills to better improve my business. Patience comes in when this are slow and I’m worried that I may not be doing enough, but I know that as long as I’m doing everything I can to be successful, it will come For those who are on a similar journey I recommend having patience. Business can be slow, times can get hard, and there are always fifty other people doing or making the same thing as you, but none of those people are you. You bring something unique to your business or product that will attract people, so don’t change who you are , or what you do. Just take each day at a time and keep moving forward.
Any advice for folks feeling overwhelmed?
When I am overwhelmed I do all the things that being me joy. I will day a few days off and just rest and reset myself. I watch Disney movies, go shopping, do craft projects, or simply just reading a few books. Doing the things that bring me joy and peace help ease the overwhelming feelings that can take over sometimes. My advice for others who may struggle with being constantly overwhelmed is to take a few days off and find things to do that make you feel relaxed and at peace so you will have a better outlet for those overwhelming feelings.. :
