We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kiari Kirk a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kiari , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
How does one find their purpose? I guess everyone’s journey is different. When I sit back and reflect on what has held my interest for the majority of my life. The answer is easy. Dance.
Ever since I saw Michael Jackson’s Thriller music video. I knew learning that routine was something I had to do. That created a snowball effect and here I am today. However, it wasn’t until I discovered Tai Lopez that I started asking myself, “what was my purpose?” Up until that point (mid 20’s) I was doing what I loved. It made me happy. It allowed me to meet new friends. Travel. Pay the rent. Purposeful….. no.
Tai encouraged us to take some time with ourselves and discover what that purpose is. How I could have a positive, uplifting, educating, and lasting affect on the people I came in contact with throughout my career. That is when it came to me. Dance has inspired self love, confidence in body, and improved my health.
Since then I have made it my mission to inspire others in that way. Health, love and confidence.
I hope I’ve done a good job.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
My story is a long war against myself. For years I have suffered from anxiety. These fears and negative thoughts that have held me back from truly expressing myself and pursuing the things I dream about on a daily basis.
Occasionally the greater good wins. I gather the courage, or get fed up with my current reality. Taking a leap of faith into the unknown. Those moments I am forever grateful for.
I decided a long time ago that I was never going to give up on myself. No matter how long it took. That small corner in the back of my mind is always rooting for me. What is it rooting for? That is fun part 😀
I want everyone to know that they can achieve anything. No matter their upbringing, haters, failures (experiments), age, setbacks and more. We are all created with the power to do what our hearts desire. By achieving mine, I hope to prove that you reading this, can to.
My vehicle of choice is dance. That is my window into my clients to help them see the bigger picture.
I create artists, performers, dancers, creatives. To help them achieve their dreams and also help me become the world renown choreographer I aspire to be.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Patience – Please be patient with yourself and the people around you. Most importantly yourself. There are so many distractions today that will have you believe you are behind or not doing it the “right way”. That isn’t true. Your journey will be different and that is ok.
Socializing – I am a true introvert and have run away from this so many times I cannot count. However I realize how important this is. It’s not what you know but who you know. Talk to everyone in the room. The janitor too! Tell people what you are doing, thinking, working on. I like to think of it like a video game. You never know what the other person has in store for you. Ok some people you should avoid. Trust yourself in those instances.
Seeker or knowledge – You do not need to know it all. There are so many successful people out there that don’t know more than the average person. They seek help. They seek specialist. Create a group of like minded individuals and share your knowledge with one another. It will advance your career and theirs so much faster.
Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
The Mindfulness Workbook for Anxiety by Tanya J Peterson, MS, NCC.
I am currently reading this material so it is fresh on my mind and as previously stated my biggest issue in life.
I thought this book was going to teach me how to combat the anxiety. Fight it off. What I am learning is much more valuable.
Awareness. A word we all know but don’t sit still long enough to practice it. Listen more. Smell more. Touch more. See more. Hear more. The more we are in involved in the life around us the less we are allowing our thoughts to control us.
I’ve learned this and I am only on week 2. Get back to me in a few weeks if you want to learn the rest.
