We were lucky to catch up with Kiazer Sylve recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kiazer , thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
Creative blocks happen. There’s no way to avoid them, life being as it may and all. My mentor taught me that discipline is the key to maintaining creativity. That discipline comes from creating consistently. I know artist that need this, that, and the third to create or some type or spiritual connection to the piece to do the work. Josh Wingerter taught me to create daily regardless of how I feel, because it forms habit and that’s all discipline is, it’s what you do consistently. So if you create consistently then you kinda eliminate creative block all together. I’m not saying you have to make master pieces everyday but if you get the mind and body in motion the rest usually sorts itself out.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
My name is Kiazer Sylve. I am an artist and a father. I’ve been painting for about 11 years now. I was born and raised in New Orleans Louisiana and still live there till this day. I sell art on Frenchmen street at Art Bazaar and I have a gallery in the Gentilly area. I make art inspired by nostalgia from my life and I like to use myself as the muse. As far as special goes, there’s nothing special about me or anyone else for that matter, what I do believe to be important is having the courage to be who we want to be, and I am an artist. My business partner and myself are big on community so we host an array of events to educate and uplift Black Businesses. Representation is important and I try my best to lead by example not only for my children but every black child who may face adversity for the color of their skin. The next frontier is robotics at the Rosser NFT Gallery, we are in the process of designing and 3d printing our own robots using AI systems. The future is now.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Whew I wish it were just 3, but 3 big impacts on my journey would have to be firstly my mentor and friend Josh Wingerter, he made the dream of being a selling artist a real thing for me. Second I’d say becoming a father changed my perspective on what’s important, I do it all basically for them. Last but not least is the support I’ve had from my family, friends, and fans, I literally couldn’t do it without them. If there’s any advice I can give is, find a mentor, literally someone who is doing what you want to do and learn as much as you can. I also advise to stay in your lane and do your thing, don’t compare your’s to others, sure other artist may be selling or successful but at what cost, never forget what’s important, your integrity and self respect. Finally above all, do the work, create everyday, take chances, develop an art community, believe in yourself, you got this💪🏾.

Awesome, really appreciate you opening up with us today and before we close maybe you can share a book recommendation with us. Has there been a book that’s been impactful in your growth and development?
Awareness by Anthony De Mello is my favorite book. I read it every couple years. If I can sum up the most important parts, I’d have to say the key take aways are to be aware of everything, hold yourself accountable, and remember to be gentle with yourself. You may think you know how life should be or where you should be in life by now but no one knows what they are doing here so be your authentic self. At the end of the day you have to be comfortable with who you are when you lay down to sleep at night, and if you aren’t, there’s still time to change it right now. Peace and blessings 🙏🏾.
