Meet Kierra

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kierra . We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kierra below.

Kierra , so good to have you with us today. We’ve always been impressed with folks who have a very clear sense of purpose and so maybe we can jump right in and talk about how you found your purpose?
Finding your purpose can be a challenge, especially without understanding what truly motivates and inspires you. My journey began when I enrolled in cosmetology school during my senior year of high school. While I initially explored female-oriented services, I discovered my passion lay elsewhere. Shadowing a barber from the same school opened my eyes to a new path—one as a female barber in a predominantly male industry. I fell in love with the environment and overall experience in the barbershop and it inspired me to master the craft/art of barbering.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I take pride in offering men precision haircuts in a sophisticated setting, aiming to ensure they feel relaxed and indulged throughout their experience. Haircutting is a meticulous and intricate process, demanding meticulous attention to even the smallest details to achieve a flawless finish without any visible lines. For me, barbering is a true art form, as it involves employing various techniques to achieve specific looks and textures.

What excites me most is witnessing the transformation in my clients, many of whom have never been serviced by a female barber before. They often leave my chair astonished by the level of detail I provide. It’s incredibly rewarding to feel like I’m constantly honing my craft and elevating my clients’ confidence.

I’m continuously seeking ways to refine my skills and enhance services. Recently, I’ve introduced a new VIP Luxury package offering a 2-hour service including a full haircut, beard trim, men’s spa facial, and beard treatment for a truly indulgent experience. Additionally, I’m proud to offer a CBD-infused Beard line, featuring beard oil and balm for beard sculpting and maintenance, promoting the health of both the skin and hair.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Looking back at my journey as a barber, I believe three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge were most impactful:

Attention to Detail: The ability to pay close attention to minor details is crucial in barbering. Every haircut requires precision and accuracy to achieve the desired result. I honed this skill by constantly practicing and seeking feedback from experienced barbers. My advice for those starting their journey is to practice consistently, focus on the small details, and always strive for perfection.

Customer Service: Building strong relationships with clients is essential in this profession. Being able to communicate effectively, understand their needs, and provide a personalized experience can set you apart as a barber. I developed my customer service skills by listening to my clients, being attentive to their preferences, and always making them feel comfortable and valued. My advice for beginners is to prioritize customer service, treat every client with respect and professionalism, and always go the extra mile to exceed their expectations.

Continuous Learning: Barbering is a constantly evolving field, and staying updated with the latest trends, techniques, and products is crucial for success. I dedicated myself to continuous learning by attending workshops, seminars, and industry events, as well as experimenting with new styles and methods. My advice for newcomers is to stay curious, never stop learning, and always be open to trying new things to improve your skills and stay ahead in the industry.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

One of the main challenges in the barbering industry is the fluctuation between slow and busy periods. Sometimes, clients may wait longer than the average 2-week period between haircuts. Whether you’re a new or established barber, building and maintaining a strong clientele is crucial. This can be achieved by leveraging various marketing strategies, such as advertising on social media platforms, running Google Ads campaigns, distributing business cards, showcasing your work, networking with friends, family, and other business owners, and actively engaging with the community to make your services stand out and attract new clients.
