Meet Kiersten Foster

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kiersten Foster. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kiersten below.

Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kiersten with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?

My work ethic has been strongly influenced by my mother, Helena, and older brother, Stephen. They both have consistently demonstrated the value of hard work through their personal and professional achievements. Their dedication and success have been a constant source of inspiration for me. As I continue to grow and develop, I strive to emulate their commitment and perseverance, aiming to achieve similar success in my own endeavors.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?

I am passionate about creating surreal art that explores personal themes, including relationships, trauma, and everyday experiences. It brings me great joy to see others engage with my work and express how much they enjoy it. Additionally, I find fulfillment in observing my growth and progress as an artist. I am excited to continue refining my craft and expanding my artistic capabilities. With this knowledge, I plan to pursue a teaching career either in a county school or by obtaining a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) degree, with the goal of teaching painting at the collegiate level.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?

Looking back, creativity, persistence, and self-reflection have been the most impactful qualities in my journey. Creativity fuels innovation, persistence helps overcome challenges, and self-reflection allows for continuous improvement.

For those early in their journey, I’d advise focusing on these areas: explore different mediums to nurture creativity, stay persistent through challenges, and regularly reflect on your work to grow both technically and conceptually. Trust the process and embrace every step.

What was the most impactful thing your parents did for you?

The most impactful support my parents provided throughout my artistic journey was instilling a sense of pride in my work. They consistently praised the neatness and beauty of my art, which motivated me to continue creating. They also surprised me with art kits and other art supplies while I was growing up which I still use and love today. They allow me to express and try new things without judgment and help me feel comfortable showcasing my art to the world. Sharing a finished piece with them is always rewarding, as I know they believe in my growth as an artist. Even to this day, they are still trying to convince me to start selling my work!
