We recently connected with Kilo Kitty Buhrmaster and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kilo Kitty , really happy you were able to join us today and we’re looking forward to sharing your story and insights with our readers. Let’s start with the heart of it all – purpose. How did you find your purpose?
How I found my purpose was not an over night. As a child, I wanted to be a veterinarian to gymnast to a math teacher. I wanted to do so many things but nothing felt quite right. After graduating from high school, I moved cross country and began to explore various fitness regimens through a local community college until it was time to move back to South Carolina. I took a break until my 20’s and since then my purpose began to slowly grow to what it is today. The last 2 years, my journey switched paths but my purpose became more clear more now than never. My purpose was to teach fitness in through aerial arts.
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
What comes to mind when you hear pole? Do you think about the movie Hustlers with Jennifer Lopez; maybe the movie Strip Down, Rise Up documentary on Netflix? When I began pole, I had no idea what to think about it. I came into the pole community with no expectations nor knowledge of anything. I immediately became drawn into for its strength, flexibility, self confidence and mental positivity that I never knew that I was looking for. Pole has done amazing things not only for me but others. Fast forward to 2023, Sanctuary of Pole was created as a Pop Up Studio in upstate SC. From there, I began offering pole and nonpole classes in January in Greenville at MOTIVE School of Movement two days a week to get the word out of a new pole studio in town. With much feedback, Few months later (April) I began pole classes in Spartanburg on Mondays at focus.upstate.
Sanctuary of Pole is the first pole studio to offer FlyPole (aerial pole), LyraPole (lollipop) and Pole Series (4 week structured programs). In June, I began offering Lyra classes after completing my certification. And this just the beginning, I am working on my certifications to bring more aerial based specialty classes!!!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I think my three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge are: determination, continuing education and being myself.
I’ve been told that I can be “stubborn”, I take that as determined. If I believe that an idea will work, I will find a way to make it happen. Now it may not happen the first time or the way I plan but that challenges me to think outside the box and come up with a new game plan. Life can knock you down; you can’t let it. In life, you are always learning, it can be from a new hobby, continuing education classes, television, etc. I like to learn as much as I can so I can apply different elements to my teaching and daily life. But most importantly, being myself. I’ve seen people change so much that they lose their self, become too driven to be “liked”, that they don’t see the damage they cause nor the effects it haves. Be real, be honest, be true; people can see through the fakeness, the mask. There are more people out there that appreciate and respect the truth then the “image”.
So the advice I give is: continue to learn, be yourself and never give up!
Alright so to wrap up, who deserves credit for helping you overcome challenges or build some of the essential skills you’ve needed?
I don’t have just one person, I have a community. Within the past two years, I gained a community that I wouldn’t trade for the world! I met amazing instructors of the aerial arts (Aerial Ambitions, Skyward Aerial Arts and M.Alice In Flight Studio) that they became friends who challenge me to become a better instructor and an awesome studio owner, They helped me love to be a student again and most of all support me (as I support them). I met amazing fellow aerial artists who challenge me, inspire me, cheer me ( and I cheer them on too!), learn and grow with me. We all come from different aspects of the aerial community but we all have each others back. I am thankful for a community that supports me as much as I support them.
