Meet Kim Freeman

We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kim Freeman. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kim below.

Kim, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform, and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.

After years of trial and error, what got me there was a simple questionnaire that I’ll never forget. You start with a list of wishes and dreams, then keep answering WHY until you get to that deep core reason that brings you to tears.

That emotion signifies you are zeroing in on your passion and purpose. What deeply matters to you. Once you get to that kernel, you KNOW it. You feel it throughout your body.

Thanks for sharing that. So, before we get any further into our conversation, can you tell our readers a bit about yourself and what you’re working on?

For me, that passion was using science to help people find lost pets. Long after the Ace Ventura Pet Detective movie, people still ask if I have a pink tutu. Despite the jokes, after 12 years as a full-time Pet Detective, I’ve found missing pets in every US state and 24 countries worldwide.

Along the way, I developed a special knack for finding cats. What was already a niche profession as a lost pet detective became even more specialized when I became the first professional Lost Cat Finder.

Doing this work daily means I’m continually discovering new techniques and insights to help owners. About 6 years ago I had an AHA moment: I realized it was time to put everything I know into an online “Lost Cat Kit” for owners can access 24/7. My Lost Cat Kit gives desperate /sleepless owners instant access to best practices based on science instead of myths & memes.

The Lost Cat Kit is filled with real world advice from a real-world pet detective.

Thanks to my DIY Lost Cat Kit, I receive emails from cat guardians thanking me for my info and telling me their cat is finally home after weeks wasted on the typical old wives’ tales and advice that didn’t work. In nearly every case, the owner laments all the wasted time saying they so wished they had found me sooner.

They best part of my work is getting happy reunion photos that show the joy and relief after days of heart-wrenching stress and worry. It keeps me going, keeps me improving, and keeps me inspired to help more people recover their beloved family members.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
One key quality is the willingness to take a big risk on a profession no one has tried before. It took years to prove myself. There are very few people who do lost pet recovery full-time. Those who do it occasionally or as a hobby never get to hone their craft.

The skills of observation are key. Many aspects of this work can be improved with training, such as the ability to spot a lie, deductive reasoning, animal psychology, wilderness tracking, and of course, the countless hours of time in the field on hands and knees. Whatever your passion and plan might be, learn all you can and aim to be the very best at it!

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’d love to collaborate with others in animal rescue. Shelters, rescues and those who care about helping creatures with no voice, no food, no hope.
