We recently connected with Kim Gueye and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, thank you so much for making time for us today. Let’s jump right into a question so many in our community are looking for answers to – how to overcome creativity blocks, writer’s block, etc. We’d love to hear your thoughts or any advice you might have.
When I hit a creativity block, I allow myself some time to create, what I call : “bad art”, yarn projects that I’m not sure I’ll be satisfied with.
I’m just going with the flow, grabbing whatever yarn calls to me and crochet something messy and far from perfection, because bad art is definitely essential art.
It takes the pressure off and keeps my hands moving.
I also step outside my craft to get inspiration, like going to thrift stores, on walks and capture outdoor vibes and colors.
The moment I stop chasing creativity, ideas find me!

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I’m Kim, the founder behind Alma Somora, a crochet brand that explores the power of self-discovery and creative expression. This art journey began as a way to reconnect with my inner joy and to help creative souls express themselves through bespoke pieces.
What makes crochet special is the intention behind each stitch. I see my creations as wearable reminders of our inner strength and potential. They’re talismans that encourage us to embrace our unique stories.
I’m passionate about building connexions with people so they feel inspired to express themselves authentically. Alma Somora is a space where the self is celebrated, and where everyone is encouraged to shine, in their own way.
What’s new for me personally is that I’m expecting my first baby! This exciting chapter in my life has led me to explore a new creative avenue: crochet creations for babies and it’s been a beautiful experience.
It really is all about sharing artistic experiences and mutual inspiration.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
I’ve realized that three things have been crucial in my journey: staying true to myself, embracing creativity without limits, and cultivating patience and playfulness. It’s important that it comes from the heart, letting our imagination run wild, and remembering that art should be fun!
Don’t be afraid to be yourself, to experiment, and to make mistakes. To nurture curiosity, exploring different mediums, and most importantly, enjoy the process. Developing our own style takes time, so be patient with yourself and celebrate every small victory along the way.
Always remember to inject joy and playfulness into your work : it’s what will make it truly shine.

Who has been most helpful in helping you overcome challenges or build and develop the essential skills, qualities or knowledge you needed to be successful?
I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have met so many wonderful people along the way who have helped me grow and develop.
I’m especially grateful for my clients and fellow artists I’ve worked with. Their trust in my vision and honest feedback have been pure gems in helping me hone my skills and refine my craft.
Sincere communication has been key to these collaborations, allowing us to learn from each other and push creative boundaries.
And of course, I have to mention my partner, who has been my rock since day one. He’s always believed in me, even when I doubted myself. His support and encouragement have given me the confidence to take risks and to pursue my dreams. More than anything, he’s been my personal mindset coach, always reminding me of my strengths and helping me to overcome my fears. I couldn’t have done it without him!
