Meet Kim Mccullough

We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kim Mccullough a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.

Kim, so good to have you with us today. We’ve got so much planned, so let’s jump right into it. We live in such a diverse world, and in many ways the world is getting better and more understanding but it’s far from perfect. There are so many times where folks find themselves in rooms or situations where they are the only ones that look like them – that might mean being the only woman of color in the room or the only person who grew up in a certain environment etc. Can you talk to us about how you’ve managed to thrive even in situations where you were the only one in the room?

Navigating spaces where I am the only one who looks like me has been both a challenge and an opportunity. My journey from teaching elementary school in Louisiana and New York to co-founding Cellar Beast Winehouse has taught me the importance of authenticity, resilience, and continuous learning.

In the wine industry, where diversity is still growing, I have found that embracing my unique perspective allows me to contribute meaningfully and drive innovation. My background in education has been invaluable, enabling me to create an inclusive atmosphere at Cellar Beast where learning and art unite to foster a distinctive wine culture.

Building strong relationships has been essential. Collaborating with a diverse team and engaging with growers from major wine regions has enriched our winemaking process and broadened our collective expertise.

Ultimately, staying true to myself, leveraging my unique experiences, and fostering an environment of inclusivity and continuous improvement have been key to thriving, even when I am the only one in the room who looks like me.

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?

At Cellar Beast Winehouse, I wear many hats as co-founder, including guiding our vision, leading external sales initiatives, and fostering an environment where artistry, sustainability, and education intersect. We’re passionate about producing wines that are both innovative and approachable, blending Old World techniques with modern creativity.

What excites me most about what we do is the ability to share not just wine, but an experience. Each bottle we create tells a story of the terroir, the grape, and the people behind it. We’re located in the heart of Pennsylvania wine country, and being able to highlight the incredible potential of this region is deeply fulfilling.

For those who might be new to Cellar Beast, we focus on crafting minimal-intervention wines that reflect our commitment to quality and respect for the environment. It’s not just about the product; it’s about creating something that brings people together, sparks conversation, and makes memories.

As for what’s new, we’ve been thrilled to host more tasting events and educational masterclasses this year, which have been great opportunities to connect directly with our community. We’re also excited about a few upcoming releases that push the boundaries of traditional winemaking while staying true to our ethos. Keep an eye out-there’s always something exciting in the works at Cellar Beast!

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?

Resilience has been at the core of everything. From navigating unexpected hurdles to carving out space in an industry that doesn’t always reflect change, resilience has been the fuel that keeps me moving forward. For anyone starting their journey, I’d say this: the road won’t always be smooth, but the ability to adapt and stay committed to your vision is what will see you through.

A passion for learning has also been pivotal. My teaching background instilled in me the belief that there’s always more to discover. Whether it’s mastering the art of winemaking or understanding the nuances of running a business, staying curious has been my greatest advantage. For those early in their path, seek opportunities to learn-be it through formal education, hands-on experiences, or mentors who inspire you.

Lastly, the ability to build connections has been a game-changer. Wine, at its heart, is about bringing people together. At Cellar Beast, our partnerships with growers, our team’s collective expertise, and our community of wine lovers have all enriched our story. My advice? Invest in your relationships. They’re not just about networking-they’re about mutual support, inspiration, and growth.

To those starting out, focus on cultivating resilience, staying curious, and connecting with others authentically. These aren’t just skills-they’re lifelong tools that will help you navigate the ups and downs of your journey while staying true to yourself.

All the wisdom you’ve shared today is sincerely appreciated. Before we go, can you tell us about the main challenge you are currently facing?

One of the biggest challenges we’ve faced at Cellar Beast Winehouse is shifting perceptions about what Pennsylvania wine can be. The region is often associated with sweet wines, and while there’s absolutely a place for those, we’re committed to showing that Pennsylvania can produce exceptional, world-class wines with incredible complexity and depth. Convincing people to take a chance on our wines-especially those who assume regional limitations-has been a hurdle, but it’s also been an opportunity to educate and engage with our audience.

We’ve tackled this challenge by inviting people into the process. Whether it’s through intimate tastings, winery tours, or conversations at events, we focus on storytelling-explaining how our techniques, such as minimal intervention and aging wines properly, result in something truly special. We let the wine speak for itself, and each new fan or advocate we gain reinforces that we’re on the right path.

Another challenge we faced early on was inventory. At Cellar Beast, we’re committed to aging our wines appropriately, which means we don’t rush anything to market. While this ensures the highest quality, it posed an initial challenge in having enough inventory to meet demand, especially as interest in our wines grew. We’ve addressed this by carefully scaling production and investing in planning strategies to balance growth with our commitment to quality.

Ultimately, overcoming these challenges has been about staying true to our vision. By focusing on education, transparency, and quality, we’re showing that Pennsylvania wineries have a lot to offer and that Cellar Beast is helping lead the way. Challenges like these only strengthen our resolve to create wines that redefine expectations.
