Meet Kim Muench

Alright – so today we’ve got the honor of introducing you to Kim Muench. We think you’ll enjoy our conversation, we’ve shared it below.

Kim , we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Finding my purpose developed through a series of events that began in 2008 when my eldest son fell into addiction to alcohol to quell his mental health issues. Together we walked through the major downs and ups of his going through medical detox on multiple occasions, intensive outpatient treatment, and then inpatient treatment and sober living. His father passed away shortly after he began his sober journey which sent him into another tailspin before he finally found his footing and has been almost fourteen years sober at the time of this writing.

I would label that time period as both my parenting wake up call and personal awakening. It was terrifying as a parent to wonder what the next phone call might bring. And I also had to empower myself to become the parent he needed, as well as the one the rest of my four younger children would need.

I continued to educate myself by going back to school with the intention of becoming a licensed chemical dependency counselor and work with teens but along that track I decided working with parents whose teen or young adult was in trouble with mental health and /or substance use was really where my heart was at. I found a parent coaching certification program (the Jai Institute for Parenting) to help me learn how to coach parents. I graduated in 2016 from that program and have been building my business ever since.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
Through the magic of social media, starting in 2021 (@kimmuenchparentcoach on Instagram and TikTok), I have developed a following that has given me a my dream of coaching parents of emerging adults (18-29) full time.

It went through a difficult decision in 2020 to leave my part time job (the only income and health insurance we had because my husband had started a travel business and of course we were in the pandemic) to go full time into building my own coaching business. Previously I had only been doing it part time.

Through the course of my first months going full time, someone said, “You are so good on video you should start a TikTok!” So, I did. And, after months of daily hard work putting videos out to share my personal story and to give parents tips on raising teens and young adults, my platform began to grow.

Today I coach parents individually, in couples, and in a small group for mom’s that is offered online twice a week. It feels very rewarding to be using the struggles I’ve experienced as a parent to guide and support other parents.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
I always say my super power is listening. Specifically listening to understand and to ask questions that help my clients gain clarity and confidence in their parenting.

My second important quality is that I am completely without judgment. I was fortunate to be raised by a mom who did not judge me at all and I’ve taken that quality into my parenting and into my business. People are afraid to get the help they need in part because they feel they will be judged for their behaviors and I know well, from my own experience, we are doing the best we can with what we know at the time and often based on our life experiences. And when we know better, we can choose to do better.

I continually reach out to experts in the field of adolescent and emerging adult development in order to keep up with what’s going on with this population of young people. I also have three of my five kids in the age range who allow me to walk my talk every day.

Thanks so much for sharing all these insights with us today. Before we go, is there a book that’s played in important role in your development?
I’ve read many impactful books, but the one that came to mind first is written by Bronnie Ware and is called The Top 5 Regrets of the Dying. I happen to read this book when I was really struggling in wanting to quit my job but knowing we wouldn’t have any income or health insurance for our family. One of the top regrets of dying people is that they lived for what others wanted or needed them to be instead of living for themselves and being truly authentic. That chapter had a profound affect on me and was the catalyst I needed to take a huge leap of faith to leave my job to dive into my purpose.
