We were lucky to catch up with Kim Pheiffer Ebert recently and have shared our conversation below.
Hi Kim, great to have you with us today and excited to have you share your wisdom with our readers. Over the years, after speaking with countless do-ers, makers, builders, entrepreneurs, artists and more we’ve noticed that the ability to take risks is central to almost all stories of triumph and so we’re really interested in hearing about your journey with risk and how you developed your risk-taking ability.
I would say I’m a “calculated” risk taker. I do think about and develop a plan in my head and I don’t rush in but have definitely taken some risk that have paid off. The ability to take more grows as you see some success (along with failures) but the success has outweighed the failures so you decide to take more. the biggest risk I took in my career was going from a single designer to hiring a small team of designers. 15 years later I’m glad I took the risk

Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
When I started my company, I was the sole interior designer and loved helping client fall in love with their homes, whether they had been there for 10 days or 10 years. I loved seeing their faces when they would see the new space transformed. Sometimes it was with their own pieces and sometimes with all new pieces as I started a room with a blank slate.
As I grew and became busier I was asked by a local builder to decorate an entire home for a parade of homes. It was a big undertaking but I was so excited about the opportunity I couldn’t pass it up. I asked a couple friends to help me as well as my mom. I never imagined how much work it was to do an entire house at once but we got it complete and at the end of the parade, they sold the house, completely finished. From here my passion and drive grew.
23 years later with 13 designers and 8 office team members, all with a passion for doing great work as well as giving back to our community.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Customer service skills and being able to work with so many different types of people. Customer service is not only giving good service but listening to your clients needs.
Being able to motivate and lead a team. Staying positive and being appreciative to the work your team does is so important to me. Someone asked me what motivates me and my answer is my team. They took a chance on me and to join KP Designs and I don’t want to let them down. I constantly am thinking of ways to grow our business and how to keep my fabulous team happy and motivated
I have a business degree and I think that was crucial to knowing how to run the design business. I now have great people around me who I go to and I love that we can bounce ideas off one another and they are always up for a chanllege

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
The past 4 1/2 years were a crazy time for our industry (thanks Covid). People were in their homes more, working, entertaining and in general, just staying home. They started looking around at their homes deciding what they needed to change. Our industry exploded from clients wanting all new furniture to clients deciding to remodel their entrire home (kitchen, bathrooms, adding home offices and home gyms, etc.) I don’t think we will see that spike in business again and we are trying to figure out the “norm” again. We were smart and even though the company was profitable in this time frame, we invested our money but we also paid it forward by starting an endowment for a KP Scholarship. We are always developing new ways clients can work with our firm and we are excited to start our new podcast in 2026.
