Meet Kimani Walker

We recently connected with Kimani Walker and have shared our conversation below.

Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I’m just a kid from Florida who enjoys creating. Photography has always been something that interested me, it started with a love for photojournalism and it just took off from there. I’ve been taking pictures for years but I would say I became a photographer about 5 years ago. I love the entire process of capturing images from the creative aspect, the execution and the result, it is such an amazing feeling. Being able to create and express is such an important thing to me, probably the most important thing.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Email is probably the quickest way to reach me, instagram as well. I’m always looking to collaborate with other creatives, MUA’s, models, photographers etc.

There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
The first skill I would say for a new photographer is to understand your camera and understand light, not just a glance or understanding bits and pieces but really taking the time to understand these things. They are undoubtedly the most important when it comes to photography. This will help you be able to adapt to any situation when taking photographs. Some of the most influential images were made by just understanding light and understanding your camera.

The next thing I would say is pretty simple but practice, practice all types of photography until you find something that really speaks to you. Practice is essential to everything and certainly to photography. I heard someone say “practice until you can’t get it wrong” and that really stuck with me.

The last thing I would say is learn how to network. I’m an introvert by heart but I definitely had to learn to step out of my comfort zone and connect with other creators. Networking is vital in this line of work because there’s so many photographers out there that you can very easily get lost in the mix. Go to networking events, your local photography meetups and just get yourself out there because all it takes is one conversation with the right person to lead to an opportunity that can change everything. Remember that.

How can folks who want to work with you connect?
I’m always looking to collab with other creatives, MUA’s, models, photographers etc. Right now I would love to collaborate with a stylist, as I really want to break into that fashion photography scene.
