Meet Kimberly Davis

We recently connected with Kimberly Davis and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kimberly, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

When I saw the first question, I said I can talk about where I picked up my good work ethics from…, (My Mom) or where my generosity came from… (I have always had a big heart) OR how I overcame my imposter syndrome…hmmm Does one ever really overcome such a psychological interference. I would like to think I have or at least become better over the years after struggling with this early on in life. You see I have never thought anything I done was ever good enough and could always stand some improvement. I have always been hard on myself even after overcoming a lot of disappointments in life including growing up with an alcoholic father in my life. A single parent home with a wonderful strong Mother who did all she could to support her five kids. Having to cope with the outside family who treated us a little differently and had it better than me and my family or so appeared as such in my eyes. Self-doubt and worthlessness came in easily and caused me to always want to do better no matter how well others thought I did or what I achieved in life, how I was praised, it was never good enough and it was short-lived happiness in my life. There is nothing I cannot do or will not try and even succeed at it but is it ever enough? Maybe this can be a positive thing in my life? To always continue to push myself and keep me motivated to where I am today.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

I genuinely appreciate the opportunity to share my journey with others.
I take on all types of jobs as a chef. I meal prep for people that have busy lives. This service involves providing several meals that they can enjoy over the course of the week or weeks. Depending on their needs. This takes away the worry of having to figure out what to cook and eat after a long day at work. Leaving my clients more time with their families. I deliver the food to them already prepared or oven ready where they can easily complete the meals themselves in their home. An accomplishment of cooking themselves without the headache of decision making.
I also go into clients’ homes to provide the whole private chef experience by preparing on site and serving several courses. This includes a meal consultation, building a menu that in hopes will awaken a great culinary experience in the privacy of their home. While I can do exquisite setups or whatever is requested with bells and whistles, I mainly like to focus on great food that is made with love that will leave the client satisfied. While many believe that anyone can cook, if not made with love you can truly tell and taste the difference. That is where I am different. (smile) I like to mix ingredients that may not sound appetizing to some but in the end leaves the palate satisfied.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

Three Most Important Qualities, Skills and/or Areas of Knowledge-Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
1) Determination- Being determined to survive and not giving up on success no matter how big or small the accomplishment truly helped me achieve my goal of owning my own business.
2) Risk Taker- Stepping out alone and not relying on anyone. Being able to stand and be alone if there is no support around.

3) Passionate -Be enthusiastic about your business, your journey. Put forth an effort to get up and go even when you run into roadblocks and people who say they are for you but only want to see you fail.

My advice-
Not everyone will be in your corner with the choices you make, but just believe in yourself, be persistent and work hard. Be open to constructive criticism. I have struggled with that, but I know it has made me better. Do something that you believe in and brings you joy in doing it. Something that does not feel like a job at the end of the day. Have excellent work ethics. Network and get your name out there. Do not be afraid to do little jobs, just be thankful for the opportunities. Never think you are better than anyone no matter how high you climb. A higher power made us all equal and that will help you stay grounded.

Okay, so before we go, is there anyone you’d like to shoutout for the role they’ve played in helping you develop the essential skills or overcome challenges along the way?

That title would go to two people besides my siblings. My Mother (Melva) for always believing in me and loving me unconditionally. Being there for me when I came out to her as a lesbian and for always having my back and dreams no matter what I set out to do. For teaching me to be strong and to have excellent work ethics. Secondly, my Wife (Veronica), best friend and co-owner of KIMVERS Catering, who is also a great mother to our sons. She pushed me to go to the next level and to not undersell myself and my cooking abilities. She was scared at first when I retired early from an awesome company of 25 years, BUT she did not shut down my dream. She stood back and waited, allowing me the room to grow and start up my business which has now taken off greater than we imagined.
