We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kimberly Russo a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kimberly, so great to have you with us and we want to jump right into a really important question. In recent years, it’s become so clear that we’re living through a time where so many folks are lacking self-confidence and self-esteem. So, we’d love to hear about your journey and how you developed your self-confidence and self-esteem.
My journey to improved self-confidence and self-esteem was significantly shaped by a shift in mindset, particularly after leaving a challenging relationship. Embracing a positive and growth-oriented mindset was key in my self-development and goal-setting. This approach helped me view challenges as opportunities, enhancing my resilience and self-belief.
Surrounding myself with supportive people and prioritizing fitness also played crucial roles in reinforcing this mindset, improving both my mental and physical well-being. Working with personal development and business coaches further empowered me, providing guidance to leverage a positive mindset effectively.
Continuous learning through podcasts and books kept my outlook growth-focused, enabling me to not just adapt but also to empower others. The support of an amazing partner has been invaluable, constantly reinforcing my belief in my abilities.
Overall, adopting a positive mindset has been central to rebuilding myself into a more confident and resilient individual, ready to face life’s challenges with optimism and strength.
Appreciate the insights and wisdom. Before we dig deeper and ask you about the skills that matter and more, maybe you can tell our readers about yourself?
I am Kim Russo, the visionary founder, CEO, and Lead Designer of On Brand Designs, a unique design studio located in the heart of Charleston, SC. In my role, I do more than just create visual experiences; I empower both my clients and my team, guiding them through the intricate world of design.
I am also proud to have created ‘The Profitable Brand Designer’ course. This course is my way of teaching creatives how to shift their mindset from being freelancers to becoming entrepreneurs, and how to build a profitable design business.
My journey in the design world began after I graduated from the Fashion Institute of Technology with a degree in packaging design. I initially worked for top packaging design agencies in New York City. However, in 2018, after years in the corporate sector, I felt a strong desire to make a more significant impact on a smaller scale. This led me to leave New York and start On Brand Designs, which I launched in September 2018. I moved to Charleston in 2020, and since then, I’ve been dedicated to growing my business.
My expertise lies in brand strategy, brand identity, website design, print graphics, and packaging design. I have a passion for creating eye-catching designs that resonate with female entrepreneurs, designs that make people stop and say, “Wow, I love that!”
Outside of work, I indulge in my love for crafting and painting pet portraits. I also cherish spending time on the beach or by the pool, relaxing with friends and family. My life in Charleston is a blend of creativity, entrepreneurship, and enjoying the simpler pleasures of life.
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe the three most impactful elements were investing in myself through courses and coaches, hiring a team for support, and understanding my ‘why’ – the driving force behind my personal and professional aspirations. These aspects not only shaped my path but also provided the motivation to persist and innovate.
For those at the beginning of their journey, my advice is to start with clear intentions and goal setting. Knowing your direction is crucial. Invest in continuous education and learn from others’ experiences. Remember, you don’t have to go through this journey alone. Seeking help and guidance can significantly impact your growth, something I continue to learn and implement. Additionally, surround yourself with people who uplift you. Having a support system of cheerleaders can make a world of difference. These steps, combined with a clear understanding of your ‘why’, can propel you forward, turning challenges into stepping stones for success.
What is the number one obstacle or challenge you are currently facing and what are you doing to try to resolve or overcome this challenge?
My current challenge is effectively marketing my course, ‘The Profitable Brand Designer,’ to a new audience different from my usual design clients. This course is designed to help creatives build a successful six-figure business, but the main obstacle is building trust and visibility with this new demographic.
To overcome this, I’m employing a strategy that includes live and recorded course launches, and venturing into Facebook ads for targeted reach. Additionally, I’m boosting my visibility and credibility through speaking engagements, podcasts, and summits. These platforms allow me to connect with my audience, share valuable insights, and establish my authority in the field.
I’m also focusing on building partnerships through affiliate marketing and seeking sales assistance to leverage wider networks. This multifaceted approach is aimed at not only attracting the right audience but also establishing the course as a key resource for creatives looking to elevate their careers.
