We’re excited to introduce you to the always interesting and insightful Kindra Williams. We hope you’ll enjoy our conversation with Kindra below.
Kindra , we can’t begin to explain how much we appreciate you sharing about your PPD experience, but we can say that so many in our community are suffering from or have suffered from postpartum issues including postpartum depression and so you sharing your story and how you overcame it might help someone who is going through it right now or in the future. What can you share with us about how you overcame PPD? For readers, please note this is not medical advice, we are not doctors, you should always consult professionals for advice and that this is merely one person sharing their story and experience.
I am so glad this question came up! Oddly enough my PPD was the sole reason for starting my business and even the meaning behind the name. While every PPD case is different, with many levels of severity and coping strategies mine was what I describe as really bad for me. I know others have more difficult journeys, some less difficult, and some not at all so I just describe it as bad for me. The medication I resulted to just made matters worse. I completely lost who I was as a person, a wife, a friend, and I felt like I couldn’t even handle being a new mom which is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to be my entire life! Almost a year of battling my PPD my husband forced me to get out of the house and have a “Mommy Makeover”. I booked a hair appointment with my amazing stylist and friend Kait, who had also recently had a baby. We discussed our journeys and struggles being new moms and she asked me if there was anything in the world I could do what would it be. I said in a perfect world I would be a florist. She said what’s stopping you? I gave a laundry list of realistic reasons mostly fears and worries stopping me but Kait wasn’t having it. She insisted this was something I could do for myself and so the idea was born! I came home bawling with excitement to my husband who immediately jumped in and started making this new dream a reality by building 14 raised beds in our backyard so I could learn to grow my own cut flowers! I then reached out to my dearest friend/ former coworker Dottie who is a retired Publix florist and asked her to mentor me in my floristry journey. She graciously agreed and we began floral classes at her home, teaching me tips and tricks that go along with the industry. I am truly grateful for her time and mentorship. Flamingos have always been sort of my spirit animal I’ve always had flamingo print on something, my bachelorette party was flamingo themed, etc. But it wasn’t until content creator Lindsey Gurk posted her story and her connection with flamingos. I had no idea that momma flamingos actually lose their pink coloring while taking care of their young. I’ve just always loved flamingos then it hit me that I’m just like them. They give absolutely everything they have to their baby making their coloring fade away. Which is quite literally what happened to me. My hair appointment was Nov/Dec 2023 and by January 2024 Flamingo Floral Services LLC was born! I quit my job in April 2024 to be home with my daughter and I’ve been working every single day since to get my pink back! Thank you for joining me on this journey!
Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I am a home based florist located in Deltona, Florida. Specializing in customizable floral arrangements. I absolutely cannot stand your typical online flower ordering services so I wanted to be different. If you have an idea or a vision I want to help bring that to life. Pictures for inspiration to recreate for you or just a color scheme and a price point, I’m your girl! I make unique gifts with outside of the box ideas as well. I offer subscription services biweekly or monthly. Everything is made to order with a 1-2 day turnaround. I do deliver for a fee but I offer FREE delivery for our hometown Deltona addresses! You can catch me at the local Farmer’s Market every weekend and specialty pop up events on occasion as well. Orders can be placed for pickup at my home, any of my markets, or events. I also do flower bars or flower arranging classes for any event or occasion. The idea is to build the clientele in the community by showing face instead of just selling online. I love the up close and personal aspect to building this business from the ground up! Hoping to expand in the future with the dream of a full service flower farm/shop.
If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
Three important qualities and skills to starting my own business journey would have to be work ethic, adaptability, I’d love to say organizational skills or time management but God and everyone knows I struggle with both of those things. Maybe the third being confidence. Work ethic – your business is what you make it. If you don’t have the drive and determination to make it work it just won’t – period. You have to be your own boss which is absolutely terrifying and harder than it looks. I’d love to tell you that I have a strict schedule for myself and I follow it daily but I do not. Stay at home Mom life and business owner doesn’t allow that unfortunately which brings me to my next point. Adaptability – you have to be able to change and pivot in any circumstance, it’s a roll with the punches kind of lifestyle now. As much as I love being in charge or control of situations I can’t control certain aspects of this business. The weather for instance, market life is not for the faint hearted wind and rain are not our friends while under a tent especially with glass flower vases. Other circumstances arise as well but being adaptable is the only way to get through it. I’m the creative brain in the household which means everything is an organized mess. It drives my husband absolutely crazy, and I have improved over the years but I am who I am. Time management isn’t my strongpoint either, mind you I’m never late to anything I just try to get too much done within a day which leaves certain tasks for the next day. If that makes sense. Confidence though, that is also a struggle because I am a chronic over thinker. I’m constantly second guessing designs, ideas, prices, but I still get out there and do the damn thing! My advice for anyone beginning their journey would be to take the leap. Just do it! Even if it starts out as more of a hop keep going until you’re ready to take the plunge! I have plenty of room to learn and grow, with a plethora of strengths and opportunities. I won’t use the word weakness because running your own business is by no means a weakness. One of my old bosses once asked me “Kindra, how do you eat an elephant?” Bewildered 20 something year old me just looked at him and he said “one bite at a time”. I have lived by that motto and even more so now than ever, entrepreneurship is my elephant and I take it day by day, with lots of grace, and one bite at a time.
How can folks who want to work with you connect?
Yes! Always looking for partnership or collaboration opportunities! I am open to any idea – everyone loves flowers so the possibilities are endless. I love the shop small and local aspects as well as larger corporations and events. Whether it be a pop up at a local small business, subscriptions with business offices and restaurants, or a collaboration with a realtor, event coordinator, or wedding planner etc. I’m open to anything as long as my flowers make people smile! I can be reached via Instagram @flamingofloralservices, Facebook – Flamingo Floral Services LLC, or text/call 407-687-8072. Text is preferred with the stay at home mom aspect, I may not answer the phone right away, so if they do call me please leave a message and I will get back to you!
