We were lucky to catch up with KingKai recently and have shared our conversation below.
KingKai, we’re thrilled to have you on our platform and we think there is so much folks can learn from you and your story. Something that matters deeply to us is living a life and leading a career filled with purpose and so let’s start by chatting about how you found your purpose.
Not to sound overly cliche, but I swear it found me. I’ve never not been making things, I recently found a newspaper I made when I was in 3rd grade I believe? It’s been in my bones from a child. The gratification I feel from taking an idea that only exists in my head and making it something tangible has not been matched anywhere. Nothing feels anywhere as good. Except the first sip of a green juice. Maybe. My purpose has always been abundantly clear to me, it was just up to me to shed the fear of failure.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?
I wish I could describe what I do better than making things, but that’s really what it boils down to. I write stories through words and sound. I write and direct videos. I design stages. I rock said stages. I do it all. I’ve been blessed by God with these talents and I utilize them to the best of my ability. That’s all I know how to do, and I know it’s what I’m meant to do. Dropping my album 𝘓𝘖𝘕𝘋𝘖𝘕 in January and seeing it flourish beyond anything I’ve released up to this point, getting on these stages and feeling the energy from all the wonderful people, getting opportunities to direct videos for other artists based off of my catalog; I see all of these things as signs that I’m on the right path. So actually, I’d say what I do is stick to the path I’ve been given.

If you had to pick three qualities that are most important to develop, which three would you say matter most?
In my personal experience, finding what I liked to do, overcoming the fear of judgement, and working really hard to improve in whatever I was invested in was the best formula. In that order. If you don’t know what you like, you’ll make things inauthentic to you, your tastes, and your life. That’s a fact. If you don’t grasp the idea that someone will always have something to say about you, but that it truly has no affect on your life, you will never get to share what it is that you like to do. That’s a fact. If you don’t work hard to get good at what you’re passionate about, you won’t truly like what you’re making because it won’t be good. That’s a fact. It’s a cycle that, if fed into correctly, will propel you to success. I’m still in the early stages of seeing what this does for me, but it’s worked so far. If it [isn’t broken], don’t fix it.

Is there a particular challenge you are currently facing?
This next story. It’s always tough starting a new idea from zero, but this time around it’s been a little tougher. I’ve been invested in this 𝘓𝘖𝘕𝘋𝘖𝘕 character and story for 2+ years at this point, performing in the whole getup and all. Now I have to switch gears whilst also continuing to promote what’s out. It’s been a challenge, but I’ll always figure it out. I always do. 𝘓𝘖𝘕𝘋𝘖𝘕‘s full of good stuff, I don’t know how much research you guys do but you should check it out. There’s something you’ll love. For what’s next though, I’ve actually begun to master storytelling for the masses. It actually will not be identifiable if it’s not looked for. The story will be there for those who want it, and whoever does not will enjoy just the same. [I’ve] said too much, I’m so excited.
