We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kirsten White a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Alright, so we’re so thrilled to have Kirsten with us today – welcome and maybe we can jump right into it with a question about one of your qualities that we most admire. How did you develop your work ethic? Where do you think you get it from?
You know what? As backwards as this is probably going to sound, I get my work ethic from never wanting to work a day in my life. I know being a business owner takes more work than being an employee ever could but I also know that working on something you love is how you ensure you never work a day in your life. I love highlighting black- owned businesses, I love teaching the masses that there’s so much more to experience in Georgia when you don’t limit yourself to just Atlanta, and I love doing all of this on my own to remind myself that I’m capable & my work ethic is nothing to play with.
Great, so let’s take a few minutes and cover your story. What should folks know about you and what you do?
Career wise, I’m simply an HR professional. There’s nothing very exciting about that but since i was laid off back in September, I’ve used my new found free time to let my creativity soar! While I’m not necessarily known for anything as of yet, I’m personally most proud of my app and the children’s book I recently self-published with Barnes & Noble. It’s called K. Renae’s Alphabet of Affirmations.
A new goal of mine that I’d love to accomplish is to present my first deck pitch. All business owners need a good investor and I’m no different. I’d love to get in front of an audience of potential investors and pitch to them just why The Black Market: GA is so unique. Investors would be a guaranteed way to expand my brand into new states and keep the growth coming!
Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?
The most impaction traits I possess are consistency, passion, and knowledge of just how unreliable or unfulfilling a 9-5 career really is for someone like me. Whether you’re early in your journey or you’ve been in it a while, without consistency or passion for what you’re doing, consider yourself stagnant. You won’t put your all into something you don’t believe in wholeheartedly.
Personally speaking, the 9-5 knowledge just came from experience. I’m good at HR but to call it my passion would be laughable. I’m not telling anyone to go quit their job or anything but I am saying that if your job leaves you feeling unfulfilled, use your days off to explore what excites you and try your hand at making that interest lucrative. You never know what you could come up with.
One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?
Always! At the moment, I would love to collaborate with apps who have similar goals or Investors who see my vision. The easiest way to get a Hold of me is through social media or going directly through my app. The Linktree I created has direct links to all of the above options.
