We caught up with the brilliant and insightful Kisha Simpson a few weeks ago and have shared our conversation below.
Kisha, thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us today. We’re excited to dive into your story and your work, but first let’s start with a broader topic that might be stopping many of our readers from pursuing their dreams – haters, nay-sayers, etc. How have you managed to persist despite haters and nay-sayers that inevitably follow folks who are doing something unique, special or off the beaten path?
Despite facing opposition from my own family, I was able to excel and grow my business by staying focused and determined. I learned that success comes with a price and that people will always love you when you are doing badly but hate you when you are doing well. It was a tough lesson to learn, but I realized that I needed to be aware of the family and fake friends who would try to bring me down first, turn against me, and spread lies about me so others could look down on me.
To persist despite the haters, naysayers, and other negative forces, I had to stay motivated and surround myself with positive influences. I focused on building a strong support system of like-minded individuals who believed in me and my business. I also stayed true to my goals and remained committed to my vision, even when others doubted me.
I also learned to be resilient and adaptable. I realized that challenges and setbacks were part of the journey and that I needed to be prepared to overcome them. I used each obstacle as an opportunity to learn and grow, and I never lost sight of my ultimate goal.
In the end, my persistence paid off. I was able to grow my business, despite the hate and negativity that I faced. I learned that success is not just about talent or hard work, but also about resilience, determination, and the ability to overcome adversity. So, if you’re facing opposition or negativity, remember to stay focused, stay motivated, and stay true to your goals. With persistence and determination, you can overcome any obstacle and achieve your dreams.
Let’s take a small detour – maybe you can share a bit about yourself before we dive back into some of the other questions we had for you?
I am the proud owner of Kisha K. Collection, a haircare brand that caters to women with natural 4c hair, but can be used on ALL hair types. My business was created out of a desire to provide haircare products that cater to the unique needs of women with textured hair, especially in light of the controversy surrounding wearing natural kinky hair.
As a woman with 4c hair myself, I know firsthand the struggles of finding hair products that work for my hair texture. That’s why I created my star product, the world’s BEST edge control. I wanted to create a product that could slick down even the most stubborn 4c hair coils and last all day without melting or curling up. I am proud to say that I have achieved that goal, and my edge control is truly the best on the planet.
What’s most exciting and special about my brand is that we create products that are not only effective but also affordable. We believe that everyone should have access to quality haircare, and we strive to make that a reality for our customers. Most of our products are made with natural ingredients and are free from harmful chemicals, making them safe for all hair types.
Currently, I am working on getting my products in stores and expanding my product line. I have more exciting things to come for my haircare brand, including new product launches and collaborations with other entrepreneurs. I am passionate about creating products that cater to the unique needs of women with textured hair, and I am committed to providing affordable, effective, and safe haircare solutions for all.
There is so much advice out there about all the different skills and qualities folks need to develop in order to succeed in today’s highly competitive environment and often it can feel overwhelming. So, if we had to break it down to just the three that matter most, which three skills or qualities would you focus on?
Reflecting on my journey, I believe that the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful for me were perseverance, flexibility, and continuous learning.
Firstly, perseverance was critical in my journey. I encountered countless obstacles and setbacks, but I never gave up on my dreams. I kept pushing forward, even when things seemed impossible. My advice to those starting their journey is to develop a mindset of resilience and persistence. Believe in yourself and your abilities, and never give up on your dreams.
Secondly, flexibility was another important quality that helped me in my journey. I had to be adaptable and open to change in order to navigate the ups and downs of entrepreneurship. Being able to pivot and adjust my approach when things weren’t working was critical to my success. For those early in their journey, I recommend being open-minded and willing to try new things. Don’t be afraid to take risks and experiment with different approaches.
Finally, continuous learning was crucial for me. In order to stay competitive and relevant in my industry, I had to constantly seek out new knowledge and skills. I made it a priority to stay up-to-date with the latest trends and developments in my field. My advice to those starting their journey is to never stop learning. Read books, attend conferences, and seek out mentors who can help you grow and develop.
With these qualities, skills, and areas of knowledge, anyone can achieve success in their journey.
What has been your biggest area of growth or improvement in the past 12 months?
Reflecting on the past year, I am proud to say that my biggest area of growth and improvement has been in my personal development. Specifically, I have learned how to have more control over my emotions, not take things personally, and expand my social network while giving back to the community
In the past, I struggled with letting my emotions get the best of me. I would get easily upset or frustrated, which would sometimes lead to conflict or strained relationships. However, over the past year, I have learned how to recognize and manage my emotions more effectively. I have practiced mindfulness techniques and worked on developing a more positive mindset. As a result, I am now better equipped to handle difficult situations and maintain healthy relationships.
Another area of growth for me has been in not taking things personally. I used to be very sensitive to criticism or negative feedback, which could sometimes hold me back from pursuing my goals. However, I have learned to reframe my thinking and view criticism as an opportunity for growth and learning. This has allowed me to take more risks and be more confident in my abilities.
Furthermore, I have made a conscious effort to expand my social network while giving back to the community. This has involved joining professional organizations, attending networking events, and volunteering for local charities. By connecting with new people and giving back to those in need, I have been able to gain new perspectives and develop a greater sense of purpose.
These experiences have allowed me to grow as a person and become a more well-rounded individual.
