Meet Kisha Smiley

We recently connected with Kisha Smiley and have shared our conversation below.

Hi Kisha, thank you so much for opening up with us about some important, but sometimes personal topics. One that really matters to us is overcoming Imposter Syndrome because we’ve seen how so many people are held back in life because of this and so we’d really appreciate hearing about how you overcame Imposter Syndrome.

A trick I’ve learned when dealing with imposter syndrome is to embrace it. I know it sounds weird, but hear me out. First, give your imposter a name to personalize it. Next, ask yourself what is your imposter trying to tell you. We always assume the worst of imposter syndrome, but maybe your imposter is there to motivate you not to fail. You can change the narrative and write your own script. Once you can decipher what exactly the imposter is trying to tell you, you can counteract it. You can let your imposter know that you do actually have the education, skills, and experience to accomplish the task at hand. You don’t have to internalize the doubt from your imposter. In fact, create a list of every reason why you are qualified and capable.

Thanks, so before we move on maybe you can share a bit more about yourself?

My name is Kisha Smiley, I am a licensed Social Worker and Mental Health Therapist. I am the creator of Recommit To Yourself. It is a therapeutic platform that promotes a positive mindset through faith, mindfulness, and forward healing. I offer content centered around resiliency, wellness, and the transformative power of journaling. Through this work, I inspire individuals to persevere and recommit to themselves, their goals, and their purpose. I am 1 of 3 therapist part of a group practice called Me Myself and Healing Counseling Services. I provide therapy services to adults and couples wanting to begin their healing journey. Areas I specialize in are life transitions, stress management, postpartum recovery and care, anxiety, depression, relationship conflict, and childhood trauma.

I’ve created 6 journals/workbooks with topics ranging from recognizing spiritual strongholds, root causes of personal fears, self-sabotaging behaviors, irrational thoughts, and recommitting to yourself. I also discuss how to change one’s perspective regarding pain and healing. I’ve created a wellness journal that’s helps one to be mindful of their finances, eating habits, physical activity— with reflective questions and journal prompts. I also have a prayer journal for those wanting to deepen their spiritual walk.

I am in the process of starting 2 new group sessions. The first group is for new moms. We will address postpartum recovery and care, emotional support, parenting tips, and navigating postpartum emotions. The second group will be a self-development group for adults who needs tools to tap into their strengths and confidence, while building healthy boundaries and self-esteem.

Looking back, what do you think were the three qualities, skills, or areas of knowledge that were most impactful in your journey? What advice do you have for folks who are early in their journey in terms of how they can best develop or improve on these?

I would say the top three qualities to have when pursuing your goals are resiliency, accountability and consistency. Resiliency to keep going when setbacks and disappointment arise. Accountability is needed for those moment of self-reflection, you have to be honest with yourself about your progress or even lack there of. You have to hold yourself accountable and remain consistent even when you may not feel like it. I always tell myself “your goals don’t care how you’re feeling, they are still there waiting to be reached.” When setting goals for areas of improvement, it’s important that those goals align with your values. Who are you as a person at the core? Check in with yourself every month to see where you need to shift your focus.

One of our goals is to help like-minded folks with similar goals connect and so before we go we want to ask if you are looking to partner or collab with others – and if so, what would make the ideal collaborator or partner?

Me Myself and Healing Counseling Services is in the process of planning an event in the Spring for women who want to build healthy connections and gain community support. During this event we will have 2 break out sessions for self-development and self-care. We will also provide attendees with a workbook filled with journal prompts and reflection activities. We are always looking for community partners to take our vision to the next level. If you would like to be apart of this event in any way, send us an email to info@memyselfandhealing.com or find us on all social media platforms.
